About this deal

The temperatures of the various hard solder vary from about 600 to 900°. The fluxes are mostly in paste form and are applied to the joint with a brush before heating. In hard soldering, a blowtorch constitutes the equipment. There is an old debate about which one of these methods is better, and the choice often boils down to personal preference. The following guidelines will help you choose the most convenient method for cleaning your tips. Read on! Before you can start soldering, you need to prep your soldering iron by tinning the tip with solder. This process will help improve the heat transfer from the iron to the item you’re soldering. Tinning will also help to protect the tip and reduce wear.

Some people say that they are not as gentle as soldering sponges because they tend to scratch and damage the tips due to friction. While this can happen when they are not used carefully, they are almost as harmless as wet sponges in terms of friction. While I’ve previously dived deep into the science of cleaning soldering irons, the ongoing debate between using a soldering sponge or brass wool for tip maintenance still draws interest. Step 4: Hold the soldering iron in one hand and solder in the other. Touch the solder to the tip of the iron and make sure the solder flows evenly around the tip. Always return the iron to its cradle or stand when not in use - never lay it directly on a work surface, table or benchMake sure you are using a cellulose sponge that is intended for cleaning soldering tips. Cellulose is a natural material derived from wood pulp. It will not melt and damage the soldering tip as a synthetic sponge would. The sponge should not be soaking wet, just lightly damp. Wring it out thoroughly after saturating with Deionized (DI) water. DI water is recommended to prevent mineral build-up on the soldering tip. Once your soldering tip has been cleaned, remember to retin by melting on a small amount of solder on the end of the tip. This prevents the working end of the tip, which is iron, from corroding when exposed to air over a period of time. For most people, an ‘everyday’ soldering task might involve fixing or improving an existing electrical connection. Very often, that can require knowing how to solder a wire - or, more specifically, how to solder two wires together. This would broadly be considered as a fairly standard, common example of a soldering job, and is generally very achievable using a basic set of common tools and materials. How to Solder a Circuit Board and PCB Board

Apply a small amount of the cleaning paste directly onto the soldering iron tip and then press it against a damp sponge or cloth to remove all residue from the surface of the tip. Begin by unplugging your iron and allowing it to cool down completely before handling it. Once cool, take a damp sponge or cloth and wipe away any bits of solder that may have attached themselves to the bit during the previous job. Then dip the tip into a cleaning solution designed for this purpose – rubbing alcohol works in a pinch – and give it another pass with the sponge or cloth if necessary. Cleaning a Soldering Iron Tip

Please note:

The first step of cleaning an oxidized soldering iron tip is to unplug the device from its power source. Once disconnected from the power source, rub the tip with a damp cloth or sponge to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on its surface. After wiping down the surface, use a brass brush or cleaning pad with some rubbing alcohol and gently scrub away any oxidation that has built up on the tip. If needed, hold the soldering iron under running water while using a bristle brush for stubborn oxidation spots. Some brass cleaners have a thin coat of flux applied to the brass wire that helps to clean and tin the tip.
