About this deal

You can choose from a wide range of pillows at Soak&Sleep which can be classified as either ‘natural pillows’ or ‘synthetic pillows’. To help you get to grips with the basics, we've broken down the pros and cons of most common pillow fillings below. Spend some time looking for a new pillow and you'll soon realise there are a whole host of pillow fillings available. From hollowfibre to goose down, synthetic to natural, the array of terms and materials can fast become a little overwhelming.

Dust mites and other allergens can also accumulate in pillows if you neglect to wash and replace your pillows regularly. One study from the University of Manchester found that the average pillow that has been used for more than 18 months contains at least a million fungal spores. Standard– the ‘regular’ pillow size that you’ll typically see in most homes, hotels and B&Bs. A standard pillow measures 50cm x 75cm / 20" x 30" and is ideal for single, double and king size beds. Then there are the more traditional, natural fillings to consider. These range from all types of feathers and down to wool filling. There’s a whole world of pillow fillings out there, so we’ve summarised the pros and cons of the various types below. Hybrid: A hybrid pillow combines multiple fill types, the most popular combination being foam and microfibre. This way, you get the benefit of a foam structure to support your head, and fluffy fibres for softness.Another issue I encountered with testing other down pillows is a strong, musty smell that lingers long after first use. That didn’t apply to this one. I also noted that there is no sign of the feathers or down poking out through the tightly-woven cover.

Junior – a small, shallow pillow suitable for toddlers and young children. A junior pillow measures 40cm x 60cm / 16" x 24". Remember, babies should never sleep with a pillow. Yes, at least every six months, because of the dead skin cells and bodily fluids that may accumulate in the pillow itself. Pillowcases should be washed every two weeks. How do I wash my pillows? Not too firm and not too plush, this pillow has Talalay latex on the inside surrounded by Purple's signature elastic grid material, which is super popular for its ability to feel equally soft and supportive. It also comes in three heights to fit a range of body types and combination sleepers. If – like me – you had always assumed that the plushest pillows had a natural down filling, the Simba Hybrid will prove you wrong. It feels as soft as the finest goose down but with the support of memory foam (although the Simba is clear that this isn’t a memory foam pillow per se). It never needs plumping, and I found it much better at keeping me cool than the natural-fill pillows I tried. Given that the filling is synthetic, it is also suitable for people with allergies or sensitive skin.Besides its cooling features, this pillow also aced Lab evaluations when we looked at how well it keeps its shape after use, how well it holds up to washing and how well it fits into a pillowcase. Even if you're not a hot sleeper, we think this one's a great choice because it's proven to be durable and long-lasting. Down alternative pillowscan still feel soft and offer good support, but they're usually made with synthetic fill so they're more affordable than down.

The best pillows you can buy in 2023 1. Silentnight Just Like Down Microfibre Pillow: Best value pillow Who it's best for: Hot sleepers or people who want a pillow that can help regulate their body temperature all night. It's a down alternative option that isn't intended for a particular sleep position. For instance, if you sleep on your side, you may want something with a bit more loft. And if you’re someone who is prone to overheating at night, it’s important to be aware that some pillows – particularly memory foam ones – may feel warmer than others. Different sleepers will get on better with different pillows, and it’s important to bear that in mind when testing. While your weight, the width of of shoulders and any allergies (eg to feathers) will affect your choice, the most important factor is your sleeping position: Synthetic pillows are usually made from polyester. As they’re hypoallergenic, they’re great for allergy sufferers and also affordable, lightweight and easy to care for. They’re good if you sleep in a variety of positions throughout the night too. But they aren’t as malleable or breathable as other pillows and they have the shortest lifespan of all pillows – with the filling often prone to clumping.

Travelrest pillow

It’s a little bit firmer than the Otty Deluxe, but it’s not so firm that it feels clinical, instead landing somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. It comes with an inbuilt protector, plus a soft, breathable and hypoallergenic bamboo cover (which can be washed at 40°C), which helps you to keep things fresher than washing your pillowcase alone . Well, as you may have come to realise if you’re tossing and turning at night squishing your current pillow into all kinds of shapes to try and get comfy, when it comes to pillows, one size does not fit all. Square– a decorative pillow that’s designed to sit behind standard pillows for a beautifully styled bed. Their extra height makes them perfect for leaning against if reading or watching TV in bed. They measure 65cm x 65cm / 26" x 26". Even if you did put time and effort into getting the right pillow the last time around, chances are it needs replacing. Even the best pillows don’t tend to last more than a few years, eventually failing to provide the level of support they used to – and that’s before you even think about the hygiene factor. You probably won’t want to hear this, but within two years of use, a third of a pillow’s weight is made up of dead skin, dirt, oil, dust mites and their droppings.
