About this deal

In 1811 Bolton supplied The Royal Mint with machinery for a new mint at Tower Hill. Under the Great Recoinage of 1816 this began striking gold and silver coins. It was not until 1825, in the reign of George IV, that it began to mint copper halfpennies and pennies. eg 'You owe me five farthings, Say the bells of St Martin's' from the nursery rhyme, 'Oranges and Lemons'. Callers' shop window, Newcastle, 1968 (image public domain) The obverse of the coin featured the reigning Australian monarch. Three were featured: George V, George VI and Elizabeth II. All of the pennies bearing George VI and Elizabeth II had a kangaroo on the reverse. The kangaroo image was on the Australian half penny and has since been included on the dollar coin and the bullion silver kangaroo. In 2008, the US Mint replaced this piece with the Lincoln bicentennial one-cent program. That was the way to commemorate two events:

Many people ask, 'what is the value of old money in today's money?'. This is a difficult question to answer. There are three values: the face value, the value in Engraver and coin designer Victor David Brenner created the Lincoln penny obverse. This design was made for the so-called Wheat penny striking from 1909 to 1958 and has remained unchanged until today. The standard weight of these pieces was 48 to the pound or one third ounce avoirdupois (145.8 grains). To combat this in 1797, Birmingham industrialist, Matthew Bolton was authorised by The Bank of England to strike the first legal tender copper pennies, and two-pence coins.
