Concord. The wine varieties of interest include Vidal Blanc and Riesling grown along Lake Erie. The state has 5 wine AVA’s. Taste Ohio Wines A couple of vineyards can be found experimenting with cold hardy species including Marquette, Maréchal Foch, and Riesling Montana Grapes and Wines The grape growers and winery owners certainly sing the praises of the FANTASTIC FIVE and I in turn praise the growers’ and winery owners’ dedication and dogged devotion to their dream of nurturing great grapes destined for great wine. Coming from all walks of life and seasons in life, many of them husband/wife dynamic duos, I was duly impressed with their craft. Because my educational focus is more on the “A.D.” side of the industry – ACTUAL DRINKING, I was delighted to macerate in the “B.C.” angle of wine – BEFORE CONSUMPTION. Antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs have been the major players in their clinical setting [ 1, 2]. Although their efficacy is well established, their deleterious, life-threatening side-effects have also been well documented [ 3, 4] which has prompted investigations into natural alternatives. An exploratory trial to identify new anticoagulants and anti-platelets sourced from medicinal plants is worthwhile. Plants are a good source for isolating natural compounds without unfavorable side effects, capable of inhibiting coagulation pathway enzymes and reducing blood platelet activation [ 5, 6, 7]. Epidemiological studies have provided evidence that diets rich in polyphenols, such as flavonoids, protect against vascular dysfunction, promote vascular health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases [ 8, 9, 10]. Polyphenol-rich diets have also been shown to have a positive effect on the vascular system, mainly through their effects on platelets and endothelial functions [ 11, 12].

So what kinds of grape will grow in Montana? Mark mentions the Valiant, but there are two other grapes we carry that are suitable for USDA Zone 4 in Great Falls. Grape Terminology: What's Hardy Mean?Vineyards in Montana are known to cultivate grapes used in making red wine varieties. These grapes include Frontenac, Marquette, Marechal Foch and Petite Pearl. While not as prominent, there are a few white wine varieties available, often made using St. Pepin and Prairie Star grapes. Other grapes found in the region include Frontenac Gris, and Crimson Pearl. The grapes used in White Raven’s Montana wines— Marquette, Frontenac and L’Acadie Blanc— are all cold-hardy varietals originally grown in cold mid-western states and bred to withstand temperatures of 30 below zero. It’s disappointing from the point of view of a producer to have to face a lot of hurdles that other states have already worked through,” Thaden said. For the last few years, flavonoids—especially flavones, flavonols and flavanols—have been investigated as inhibitors of blood platelet aggregation. Flavonoids are capable of reducing blood platelet aggregation and the granule secretion induced by different stimulators. This effect is mediated by inhibition of different pathways, such as phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/PKB (AKT), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2, p38 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) ½ [ 40]. Inhibition of the PI3K/PKB pathway is most likely with GSE, because upon stimulation of the P2Y12 receptor the sub-units of the heterotrimeric Gi protein (Gα and the Gβγ dimer) are dissociated and activate different signaling pathways. The Gβγ dimers then activate the PI3K/PKB pathway, which results in activation of the αIIbβ3 integrin (fibrinogen receptor), and subsequent aggregation [ 41, 42].

In 2004, Montana pastor Bob Thaden placed a phone call to a Minnesota man named Ray Winter. Thaden had heard that Winter was successfully growing cold-hardy grapes developed at the University of Minnesota, and wanted to find out if it was true. Winter assured Thaden that not only could these grapes grow in midwest winters, but they could likely be successful in Thaden’s home state of Montana, as well. Out in Miles City, Thaden put a few grape vines in the ground. They did well, so he planted a few more the next year. Linda Coco, CSW is a “Roads Scholar” with a passion for road-tripping across the great state of Montana and beyond, learning all she can about the people and places she explores. Color Charts Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Research at the University of Nevada (Reno) started in 2007 to explore the potential for wine grapes in northwestern Nevada. There are now at least 2 wineries in the state. University of Nevada ViticultureChardonnay. Virginia is organized and growing now with over 3,100 vineyard acres. Even though Chardonnay is the most planted variety, the region has focused on Viognier and Bordeaux blends as the state specialty. Virginia Wine Board Patricia, Zach, Larry, Harlene and Tom are the FANTASTIC FIVE of Montana’s up-and-coming grape industry. Montana’s climate would otherwise be the wrath of grapes if not for the expertise of these grape crusaders. They indeed are a treasure of the Treasure State. Paired with the passion of Montana’s vineyard owners and winemakers, the Big Sky Country has the potential for making a big mark in the wine world. Edelweiss produces a semi-sweet to sweet white wine and is the most planted wine grape. Frontenac is the most widely planted red in Nebraska. But what does it mean to say the Valiant grape is "hardy?" Hardy refers to the plants ability to survive the cold winters we experience here in Montana. If a plant is not hardy, it will suffer complete winterkill, and just end up as twigs the next season... and while that won't work for weeds... it COULD kill your grapes. Another symptom that happens to plants that aren't fit for their grow zones, if not complete winterkill, is bud/old wood damage this results in stunted growth, extremely slow growth and poor fruit production. After the bottling business began seeing a comfortable level of success, the Murphys set their sights on returning to Columbia Falls, with the dream of bringing wine-making home with them. For several years the couple has returned to live in Montana seasonally and lay the foundation for what is now White Raven Winery, owned by the Murphys and managed by Dan’s longterm friend and recently returned Columbia Falls local Wil Nieman. Today we have a guest post from Linda Coco, CSW. Linda tells use about five specialists—from plant researchers to extension agents to cold-climate grape experts—she dubs the “Divine Wine Super Heroes” of Montana’s growing wine industry. After you read her article, I am sure you will agree! Philosophically, we are committed to the ideal that we refuse to make wine out of anything that will not grow here,” Thaden said. “As I jokingly sometimes put it — we aren’t interested in making California wine or Oregon wine or wine from Mars in Montana. We want to make Montana wine in Montana.”

McGuire has trained her palate to be able to taste this nuance — through years of experience in the wine country of Italy, the vineyards of Argentina, and beyond. Today, she uses that expertise in a location that isn’t known for its wine prowess but someday could be — Montana. Very cold winters and very hot summers make it difficult to grow grapes in New Mexico. New Mexico Wine and Grape Growers Association This leaves Montana winemakers like Thaden and the McGuires to face the holes in the legal code — and to try to change them. Both Thaden and Brian McGuire have been active in campaigning to update wine laws in Montana. Many attempts like last year’s House Bill 688, which would have created a committee to study wine in the state, ultimately failed. There are 8 wineries in Montana, often creating their blends using grapes from other regions due to the location and climate in Montana. However, winemakers have started to cultivate hybrid grapes capable of surviving in the area and producing incredible wines. What Grapes Grow In Montana?
