About this deal

The Old One - Prometheus figure, condemned to the "coal cellar" to have his eyes gouged out every 12 hours. Husband of the architect and father of the Mariner, the Piper, and Lord Sunday.

First, there's the hero, Arthur Penhaligon. Let me say that again: Arthur. PENHALIGON. PEN HAL IGON. That said, I wouldn't have read this book - let alone bought it - if not for a glowing recommendation from the great and wonderful Cillian/BB. And so here's a big thank-you to her, because while my mind wasn't (quite) blown, I am glad not to have missed out on what seems a fantastic series. This book feels to me like a blend of the His Dark Materials Trilogy and the Pendragon series, and I quite enjoyed it. In fact, the day I finished it I went looking for the sequel in the bookstore of a small town I was passing through, and I would have bought it - but they had only one Nix Book (in the whole store!) and it was one I'd never heard of. For shame, for shame. I'll get Grim Tuesday somehow... Four of the seven trustees have been defeated and their Keys taken, but for Arthur Penhaligon, the week is still getting worse. His friends have been captured by the Piper, and the New Nithling army still controls most of the Great Maze.

Garth Nix has always, and will always, be one of my favourite writers. This series was part of my pre-teen childhood, The Old Kingdom series was part of my young teen years and I still love them to this day, along with his many non-series books. Lampshaded in Lady Wednesday. Arthur's home is described as something along the lines of "Odd name for a town... Never heard of that country before..." Leaf – A 12-year-old human girl who befriends Arthur. She becomes involved with Arthur's adventures in the House. The Architect - God figure. Creator of the House and the Secondary realms. Mother of the Mariner and the Piper. Only when I'm nervous,' replied Japeth. 'I am . . . I used to be a Thesaurus Minimus Grade Two. It is an occupational hazard, danger, or threat that we sometimes become prolix, verbose, long-winded, longiloquent . . .

Towards the end of the book, he is described to be wearing a white bathrobe with two gold coins on his eyes. Noodle Incident: We never discover exactly what the Old One did that pissed the Architect off so badly. A rare example of this trope not being Played for Laughs. No Name Given: We never find out what town Arthur lives in, or even the country. It's complicated as the series is set in an Alternate History. Or 20 Minutes into the Future.

Applied Phlebotinum: "Nothing", the stuff from which everything is made and everything will eventually return. It can do a variety of things, mostly destroy anything if given enough time and form strange " Nithlings" if combined with normal matter. It's also an important — but dangerous — component in many spells. However, it may not apply. Arthur's hi-tech cast in Drowned Wednesday, and the fleetingly mentioned electronic paper are two examples of future technology, meaning that the plague could be a future event, and the story is set 20 Minutes into the Future. The main antagonist in this story is Mister Monday, one of the seven Days against whom Arthur must face off. They were seven of the Architect's favourite Denizens and were placed in charge of the The House (in absentia). They were each given one of seven Keys, and the House split into seven Domains, each Day ruling one of these Domains - having absolute power in their Demise. They were also forbidden to enter the Universes outside of the House (the 'Original Law') but they and their minions are capable of going to any place in existence on the day with their namesake (i.e. 'Mister Monday' can go to Earth on a Monday). Unfortunately, though originally pure of heart, absolute power corrupted them, in different ways, absolutely. In the case of Mister Monday, he has the sin of 'Sloth' - extreme laziness. Mister Monday is the possessor of The First Key. Also Suzy Turquoise Blue – A female inhabitant of the House, a 'Piper's Child' (meaning she was brought there by the 'Piper') who chooses to work with Arthur and becomes his friend. Has been in the House for centuries, but has the appearance and behaviour of a child.
