Evlyne: “Oh gosh! With me, I actually didn’t ever want to be an actor, it happened by accident. From a young age I was struggling with people and I never really spoke – I was pretty much mute to people I didn’t really know. STEPHEN Daldry’s award-garlanded reimagining of J B Priestley’s haunting family drama An Inspector Calls will return to its York roots next year. In February 2015, filming began in Saltaire, West Yorkshire. [6] Although the exterior shots of the mill were filmed at Saltaire, the interior shots of the mill were filmed at Queen Street Mill on the outskirts of Burnley, Lancashire. A full-sized office was built in the middle of the Weaving Shed for this production and was dismantled once filming was completed. Hailed as the theatrical event of its generation, winning more awards than any other production in history, An Inspector Calls has thrilled more than 4 million people worldwide.

John Plunkett (14 September 2015). "BBC's An Inspector Calls arrests nearly 6 million viewers | Media". The Guardian . Retrieved 23 September 2015. Now world-renowned as one of Britain’s leading theatre and film directors, Stephen Daldry has received Academy Award nominations for his films The Reader, The Hours, Billy Elliot and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. His recent West End theatre work includes David Hare’s Skylight at the Wyndham’s Theatre and Peter Morgan’s The Audience at the Apollo Theatre. His multi award-winning production of Billy Elliot The Musical ran for 11 incredible years at the Victoria Palace before embarking on a national tour. The Inspector is Priestley’s mouthpiece. This means he speaks about the need for a fair society with a strong sense of community.George: “Eric is well educated because he’s been sent to public school. He enjoys a drink, probably a little bit too much. He really wants to be respected by his dad. Unfortunately, the combination results in some pretty catastrophic things.”

AN INSPECTOR CALLS is directed by the world-renowned theatre and film director Stephen Daldry. Stephen’s many theatre credits include The Audience, Skylight and Billy Elliot The Musical. His film credits include The Hours, The Reader and Billy Elliot, all of which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Director. Most recently he has directed several episodes of the Netflix smash hit series The Crown, for which he is also producer. But all they really know is that they behaved badly to someone like her, one of ‘the millions and millions of Eva Smiths’ – that is, someone who is poor and has no power. Evlyne: “For me, it’s not being able to see your work or the story you’re creating because you’re so involved and living in the moment of it. You don’t really see the end result. I feel that the end result is mainly the response from the audience; if they got the story then we’ve done our job.” An Inspector Calls is a 2015 British thriller television film written by Helen Edmundson, based on the 1945 J. B. Priestley play of the same name. It is directed by Aisling Walsh, [2] produced by Howard Ella [3] and stars David Thewlis [4] [5] as the titular character. The film was first broadcast on 13 September 2015 on BBC One.

Priestley explores ideas about justice by showing how the fate of the poorly paid Eva Smith is in the hands of the wealthy Birlings and the aristocratic Gerald Croft. They make a series of choices, creating a ‘chain of events’ that leads to her downfall. Inspector Goole is Priestley’s mouthpiece and Priestley gives him a commanding voice as the Inspector interrogates each of the characters in turn.

Goole delivers one of theatre's most resonant final speeches: "And I tell you that the time will soon come when, if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish. Good night." Sybil Birling does not understand why her daughter Sheila is so impressed with the Inspector. She does not grasp the Inspector’s message ‘that we are all responsible for one another’ and most of the time she goes along with what her husband says. She is more concerned to keep things under wraps and make sure there is no gossip that could harm her family. She is not interested in people outside her own class. David Thewlis plays title role in BBC's An Inspector Calls". Prolific North. 30 January 2015. Archived from the original on 6 February 2015 . Retrieved 9 March 2015.Final scenes establish that Goole is not a real policeman, and suggest that he is some form of supernatural messenger. Evlyne: “One of the sayings at RADA was, ‘plan it, know it and forget it’. It’s the hardest thing to do, but it’s the most rewarding thing to do.”

We never meet Eva Smith, and Inspector Goole is the only one who knows what happens to her. He controls when the characters see Eva Smith’s photo, so no two characters see the photograph at the same time. Perhaps they do not even see the same photo. Some people put up fairy lights and flowers, but for me I’m very simple. With autism, as long as I’ve got really comfy clothes, a phone charger and headphones to cancel out sound, I’m all good.” George Rowlands’ theatre credits include Parliament Square at The Unicorn Theatre, The Boy With The Bee Jar at The Hope Theatre and Macbeth with Quarter Too Ensemble. On this occasion, I was put in mind of Agatha Christie’s classic novel And Then Were None, in which a group of sinners—all of whom have contributed to the deaths of others—are eliminated one by one in an isolated house. J B Priestley may not resort to homicide, but the truths he places within Inspector Goole’s mouth have devastating consequences nonetheless. When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences. More relevant now than ever, this is a must-see for a whole new generation of theatregoers. Written at the end of the Second World War and set before the First, An Inspector Calls is a compelling and haunting thriller. The story begins when the mysterious Inspector Goole calls unexpectedly on the prosperous Birling family home. Their peaceful family dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. George: “With other jobs, you can put a direct amount of work in, you can work more, you can do this and this, and your results will be better because of it. Like if you’re studying for an exam, the more you revise, the better the result. George Rowlands’ Eric Birling and Christine Kavanagh’s Mrs Birling in rehearsal. Picture: Mark Douet The production is well performed by a strong ensemble, but I was particularly impressed by the more seasoned performers. Liam Brennan gives an arresting (no pun intended) performance as the inspector, while Jeff Harmer and Christine Kavanagh are both excellent as the elder Birlings. Evlyne: “Well, the fact that is has three timelines helps. It’s set across three timelines – you’ve got 1912, which is where the play is set; then you’ve got the future, which is the Blitz, 1945, and then you’ve also got the current now, 2022.
