About this deal

Before getting out there and aerating, you need to be sure that the soil is relatively moist, so either water the lawn before or plan to aerate the day after it rains. Mowing the lawn beforehand doesn’t hurt either. It has 30 metal spikes in total, which are each 45 mm long, and works well to aerate moist ground. Alongside this, the rolling lawn aerator is 30 cm wide, so it’s narrow enough to manoeuvre around smaller areas. As a result, this is one of the best aerators for small gardens. Aeration with solid spikes using equipment such as the garden fork, aerator sandals or shoes, rolling lawn aerators or powered machinery is generally done to a depth between 1 and 6 inches, with the top two inches being the most important. There are also star like slitters that can be inserted as a cassette into turf machinery or towed behind ride-on mowers or lawn tractors. Roller spike aerators are the most popular type of lawn aerator. Many are simply pushed across the lawn. As the roller rotates, the spikes are pushed into the ground. Spiked lawn aerators are either manual or electric. It’s worth noting that this aerator isn’t ‘hollow-tined’. The 8 cm spikes don’t remove any earth, so the ground isn’t any less compact. However, it’s still very effective. The spikes are 6 mm wide and create holes that allow air, water and nutrients to get deeper into the soil. This type of aerator has an additional benefit over hollow tine models – there’s no need to remove plugs of soil from the tines after use. Instead, simply insert the spikes into the soil and remove.

Lawn aerator is used to improve the quality of the lawn and increase water, oxygen and nutrient uptake. Easy to use push along system it can help with lawns that have become compact over time thanks to constant use. There’s no need to overcomplicate things when it comes to some gardening tools, and the Ames 4-Spike Lawn Aerator is a great example of when simplicity works well.Whilst these aerator shoes are fairly easy to use, it’s worth noting that they work best if your lawn is watered thoroughly before use. When the soil is very dry, the spikes can be difficult to push into the ground. You’ll also need to get used to walking in these aerator shoes, as it can be a little hard to maintain balance.

Our spike roller comes in 500mm size that will aerate your lawn, this will break up the layering effect, and allow grass to grow as it should. Aerating your lawn more frequently will be beneficial especially if it’s a high traffic area, which will tend to compact the soil and make proper growth difficult. As you can see, there’s a lot to love about this machine. It’s relatively hard to find flaws with its performance, but there are a couple of points to mention in terms of design. Firstly, the power cable is only 4.5 m long, so an extension cable will almost certainly be required, and the 28 L collection box is also relatively small. For these reasons, despite its powerful motor, it’s only suitable for smaller spaces. The rest of the product is of slightly lower quality, as is expected of budget tools, but there was nothing to get me worried and I’m sure anyone would get their money’s worth out of this lawn aerator. Designed primarily for medium size areas, this VonHaus 2 in 1 Electric Lawn Scarifier and Aerator is a great budget option if you’re after an electric machine. It’s particularly useful as a scarifier, although the aerator works well in certain contexts. As it is easy to guess from its name, this tool doubles as a lawn aerator and a scarifier thanks to the two interchangeable attachments that come in the box. The 16-tine scarifying roller not only allows you to remove thatch and moss from your lawn but also helps better air and water penetration by making deep holes in the soil. The aerating roller, in turn, comes equipped with 20 spikes that help clean the lawn from leaves, moss, and other debris. The debris is neatly collected into a 40-litre bag for further disposal.

There are 3 main types of lawn aerator on the market – roller spike aerators, tine aerators and spiked shoe aerators.

Aerating is only supposed to be done a couple of times a year, in spring or Autumn, so you have to ask yourself if it is worth spending a lot of money on something that you will not be using all that often. There are anti-slip pads on the part of the shoe that connects to the sole of your own shoes, helping to prevent slipping.

I 100% recommend lawn aeration, but I don’t see the need to do it more than once a year, and in my opinion, it will benefit lawns that are hard and compacted the most.

One of the best things about this aerator is how durable it is. The tines are easily replaceable if needed, and the body of the aerator is extremely solid. There’s a small area where you can place your foot so your weight will sink the tines into the soil. When it comes to the frequency with which you should be aerating your lawn, that all depends on the grass itself. Newer lawns need more aeration because their root systems are less than mature, a process which is boosted by regular aeration. If you have a new non-established lawn, it’s prudent to aerate twice a year. Dethatching, also known as scarifying, is a process where the excess thatch is raked out and removed from the lawn. This is something I have done many times, and I suggest gardeners do this once a year as it can really help to let the lawn breathe. Manual hollow tine – look out for strong, solid tines that will cope with compacted turf, a decent tread to prevent your foot from slipping, and a soft-grip handle for comfort.
