About this deal

The blank also provides plenty of power with minimal input, which makes pulling off longer casts feel effortless, rather than being a struggle. Casters are a versatile bait, appealing to a wide range of fish species. Their natural origin as part of the life cycle of the bluebottle fly makes them an attractive food source in many freshwater environments. Target Species I have a selection of hook patterns that I use depending on the situation. On a hard canal when I expect bites to be at a premium, I usually start on a Kamasan B512 which is a fine wire, red-coloured wide gape hook. It is light but strong and teamed with a three to four elastic is balanced, using hooklength diameters up to .10mm. The maggot forms a hard, brown outer shell before eventually metamorphosing into a fly. This is the same process by which a caterpillar forms a chrysalis before emerging as a butterfly.

Once casters start appearing in earnest you are in business. Keep the measuring going, equal part maggots to dust - this tells you exactly how much maggot is left and how many you will need for the following week. Don't mix! These three patterns will handle any lumps you hook, i.e. bream of 2lb plus, without being too heavy as to affect delicate presentation. These can be teamed with hooklength diameters of .085mm to .12mm and with elastics up to a number eight. The finished rig will comprise a spread bulk with two-millimetre gaps between the styls in the spread bulk, plus three or four half number 14 styls spread equidistantly from the spread bulk down to the hooklength loop.

It also comes with quality, KIGAN Stainless Steel Zirconia Guides; these really help the line to move smoothly, which is crucial for those bigger casts. Fast action rods are best for pendulum or competition casting. They allow you to send rigs flying the greatest distance. For this reason, they are the best choice on huge, shallow beaches or larger estuaries where channels are further out.

Again casters can be used in a similar way to maggots, either directly on the hook or hair rigged, again commonly done with a bait band. Casters are also great in spod mixes and used in feeder fishing. Just about every feature of this rod has been designed with longer casts in mind. It comes in lengths of 12 and 13 feet, both of which handle distance fishing well. I found the 13-foot, 3.75 lb version to, naturally, manage huge casts and do so with greater ease than its shorter counterpart. Also known as the Canadian Night Crawlers, are another great live bait for fishing. These are more favoured on natural fishing venues and are great for attracting large Perch, Chub, Bream, Eels, Tench, Pike and even Catfish! However they are most popular for fishing Sea Trout and Salmon. At the age of 78, he showed his sheer class, catching getting on for 50lb of bream and big roach, fishing caster on the pole and on the tip in a wide near a disused mining pit.

Three or four casters on a size 10 hook don’t look too unappealing, but there are better ways to present this bait that eliminate problems with small fish. This is a rod that comes in test curves of 3 and 3.25 lbs; as I anticipated, the 3.25lb offering did bring more to the table in terms of power and casting performance over longer distances. To make a pint of casters you will need just over a pint of maggots – to take into account those that will die. The best maggots to use to create casters are white maggots. Coloured maggots just do not make good casters, probably due to the fact that they contain impurities, in the form of dies, that don’t help the fly’s metamorphosis. Freezing: Place the bags in the freezer, ensuring they lie flat and nothing heavy is placed on top to avoid squashing. You can read all about how he came across using casters as hook bait in his fantastic book, Match Fishing with Benny Ashurst, if you can get hold of a copy. An old friend from my youth, Geoff Peet, lent me his copy and more than 30 years later, when we reconnected on Facebook, I reminded him I still had it. Generously he said I could keep it. Thanks, Geoff, that was mighty kind of you, and it’s a book I treasure. Caster Fishing – The “Bible”– still worth reading today!
