Sidmouth Gin is a small, family-run distillery who use botanicals sourced fresh from the beach and surrounding Sid Valley area, giving their gin a true taste of Sidmouth. They currently boast two awards for their gins. Devon Cove, Hope Cove After tasting Devon Gin, Hamish brings out a second gin not yet labelled so the cloudiness is clearly visible through the clear glass bottle. Cloudy Gins are not uncommon as the botanicals are full of essential oils (in particular the juniper berries and citrus peels) these oils dissolve during distillation and are held in the ethanol solution, when water is added (during the cutting process) the oils drop out of the solution causing a milky cloud, this is known as louching. Many distillers will try to avoid louching by controlling the botanicals or filtering (which can cause loss of delicate flavours) instead Hamish has embraced the louche effect and named this gin ‘Ghost’ – great! A cloudy spirit called Ghost is pretty inspired. The mere fact the recipe has double the juniper of his Devon Gin obviously contributes to the cloudiness, this recipe also includes liquorice and green anise, he explains that he’s still fine tuning it but I know this is going to be a sure hit.London Dry Gin is a subset of gin that was popularised in England during the 18th century. The key difference between regular gin and London dry gin is that while regular gins are often sweetened after distillation (with sugar or syrup), London dry gins are not sweetened at all—a feature that gives them a less syrupy taste and more of an herbal bite. Additionally, traditional English recipes call for only natural ingredients—no artificial flavours or colours are allowed in London dry gins. This means that all flavour is derived solely from botanicals like juniper, coriander seeds, citrus peel and aromatics, which give it a distinctively herbal taste. As its name implies, it must also be bottled in England to be considered genuine London Dry Gin. Exeter Quayside Distillery offers full distillery tours, where you can learn about the exact process that goes into making their gin. Whether you want to create a gin for a special occasion, make a birthday present, or just fancy having your own unique spirit, you’ll love this gin-making experience.
