About this deal

Also in step 1 you use a spoke shave to round the top. Someone less skilled may find it easier to use a file to shape the top. It will give more control. (You may like the result better yourself.) The fence of a cutting gauge is used to hold a measurement. It can be moved along the gauge’s stem and secured in place using the thumb screw. If you’re looking for more inspiration, I’ve linked a few of my favorite YouTube builds for marking gauges below. The best way to sharpen a wheel gauge is to remove the blade and rub it bezel-up on your sharpening stones. If you’re having trouble gripping it, try holding it down with a simple pencil eraser.

Sharpening the small blades of a cutting gauge can be difficult, but it will be a necessity if you plan to use it regularly for years on end. If you are a hand tool woodworker odds are you already have sharpening stones or plates that will get the job done. Below you will find a table depicting the availability of MARPLES Gauges plotted against time up to 1965. After that time I have just included further notes. Like all of the best marking gauges, it holds its setting firmly and cuts a clean line. What sets this one apart is a touch of luxury. Wheel gauges are also capable of cutting very precise lines, similar to cutting gauges. Typically they’re easy to adjust as well, and often have measurements printed on the stem (although you should still measure).First of all, there’s no need to tilt the device or force it forward to mark your piece. Since it’s smooth and rounded, you don’t need to tilt the cutter like you do with an old-school pin model. You could of course buy a new or second-hand marking gauge and modify that if you want but for me that’s missing the point; making your own is far more satisfying and you get to choose the timber. My choice on Green speed meter: Measure green speed using the standardized ball roll measurement method (USGA specification)

Below are pictures of the short lived #2153T [ Thumbscrew Head securing bolt]. This was available c.1959-1965+. The REGISTERED MORTICE GAUGE shown listed in 1861 and 1873 [above] was a strange device whereby the Head was moved along a threaded rod via a slotted screw mounted on the end. The point closest to the head was itself internally screw regulated from the end of the stem: The photo below shows the V slot cut in the head to accomodate the point closest to the Head so as to convert the Gauge to a Regular Mortice Gauge. The tool is set on the selected cut grass. The length of the grass can then be read off from the metric scale. Again, all early Gauges had no description of the Wood employed, but Boxwood was plentiful and in large sizes at that time. Measuring tool, 2 pcs: Prism guage accurately measures grass heights on greens. Separate tool to measure HOC on fairways, roughs or semi-roughs.
