StarSense Explorer uses patented technology and your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed in the night sky. A Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), like the ones satellites use in orbit to correctly orient themselves, helps the app match star patterns it detects overhead to its internal database. As well as the 20mm and 10mm Kellner eyepieces supplied, there’s a 90° erect image diagonal included, meaning the telescope is also suitable for terrestrial observations.

Although it can also be utilised for astronomical objects, the erect image diagonal enables right-side-up viewing, which is perfect for terrestrial things. The Inspire 100AZ’s optical tube is a 100mm f/6.6 refractor with a focal length of 660mm-or so they say; in fact, they just stopped down a 102mm f/6.5 slightly due to the design of the front of the telescope being slightly different from the norm. Refractors have been in use for centuries, the original design came from Galileo Galilei in the 1600s. It's worth noting that because of its rather unusual hood design the Celestron Inspire 100AZ can't take solar filters, so should never be used to observe the Sun. Should you buy the Celestron Inspire 100AZ telescope?Following the theme of this telescope, the Celestron Inspire 100AZ Refractor can see a little bit of everything. This is because it has solid optics that are well suited for a variety of different stargazing types. Saturn’s rings are easy to spot with the Inspire 100AZ, as is the Cassini Division within them and a few cloud bands on the planet itself, though they are not particularly colourful and appear as purely symmetrical strips. A few of Saturn’s moons can also be seen, with Titan being the brightest among them. Rhea, Tethys, and Dione are easy to spot; Enceladus and Iapetus are tougher.

Celestron provide a comprehensive set of accessories to use with this scope. The following come included in the box: The Celestron Inspire 100az combines premium components, quality material and great fully multi-coated optics for a reasonable price. It comes with 100mm Aperture (3.94″), a 660mm Focal Length and a f/6.5 Focal Ratio. This is great specification for a beginner or even an intermediate who is looking for a portable and easy to use telescope. When focused, the 100az will deliver high quality images of the Moon, the Planets of the Solar system and some DSO’s (Deep sky Objects) including the Andromeda Galaxy. BBC Sky at Night magazine awarded the 100AZ 4.5 stars in their review, they said " The ease with which this scope can be set up is a real bonus for beginners wanting to start observing asap" As for the tripod, it essentially acts as the 100AZ’s mount and is very short meaning if you want to view certain celestial objects in the sky beyond around a 45 degree point, it will be pretty annoying to do. Then again this is less to do with the tripod and more to do with the design flaws of the 100AZ. What Are Users Of The Celestron Inspire 100AZ’s Saying If you are unsure how to align the camera, tap the Menu icon button and turn on the Camera Setup Assistant. Now, when you go through the camera alignment screens, there will be information and videos to walk you through the process.This is possible because of the large 100mm objective lens, fairly low focal ratio, and smooth altazimuth mount. This combination gives you the ability to scan the sky and get great views of each different kind of celestial body. The Inspire 100AZ telescope would be most suitable for younger beginners as the views and versatility would keep their interest going. Celestron’s XLT optical coatings improve light transmission, enhancing the views even more. The telescope also includes a 90-degree erect image diagonal, so you can use it during the day to view birds, wildlife, landscapes, and more. The Inspire 100AZ uses an achromatic refractor lens, which is fully coated meaning it’ll be able to provide a crisp and detailed view of space whilst decreasing issues with aberration , provided you don’t go beyond it’s capabilities but, it also has a few shortcoming due to how the achromatic lens is designed. The erect image diagonal ensures that all of the images are upright when you are looking through the telescope. Without it, refractor telescopes naturally display images upside down due to the way they collect light and process images. This also makes it so you can technically use this telescope as a terrestrial scope where you can take a look at things right here on Earth as well. Just make sure never to look at the sun if you are using it during the day!
