About this deal

If you are completely new to Battletech I highly recommend you start here. It gives you a taste of the system while retaining the flavour, and you can play a full 4vs4 game using it. 80s style game design is not for everyone, and this lets you try it before you heavily commit. JumpShips: JumpShips can perform jumps of up to 30 lightyears between Jump Points within mere seconds (typically from one star system to another). They are essentially Kearny-Fuchida Drive cores to which DropShips can attach themselves for faster-than-light transportation. Wolverine-6R– More of a brawler with a Medium Laser, SRM-6 and AC/5, the Wolverine needs to get close to use all it’s weapon systems. This means it benefits from cover to prevent it taking a lot of damage on the way in.

In addition to the aforementioned factions, mercenary units play an important role. Some prominent units have achieved considerable fame and power, to the point of ruling entire planets. They are effectively autonomous political entities. Published in 1986, BattleForce is the game of Small Unit Actions in the 31st Century, featuring mapsheets that, while printed to the same physical size as BattleTech hexes, represented 180 m of ground space (later changed to 90 m). Turns are similarly scaled up, representing 60 seconds of time. BattleForce was the first BattleTech game to introduce a game wide level of abstraction, grouping 'Mechs, vehicles and air support into single units at the Lance level. Doing away with record sheets and instead aggregating unit damage to a simple set of steps recorded on the counter itself, BattleForce is intended for the convenient staging of battles between regiment sized forces. The BattleForce scale of play has carried through into the current Strategic Operations rulebook.

Delivery Options

This is the latest iteration of the Battletech starter set that has been around in various editions for decades, with nice plastic miniatures. There was a previous starter set with plastic minis in the 25th Anniversary Intro box in 2011 (though with Wizkids you’ll notice the 25th Anniversary set was released in the 27th anniversary year), and the current miniatures are substantially better, showing the evolution of ‘boardgame’ miniatures in the eight years between sets. The BattleTech universe is largely rooted in real-world physics, but some key premises of the universe are science fiction in that they seem to defy the laws of physics as they are currently known. These include superefficient fusion engines that supply vast amounts of power from relatively small and compact devices, starship thrust drives that outperform any currently known thrusters technology, and Kearny-Fuchida Drive technology that allows for faster-than-light travel and communication.

Units Carrying Non-Infantry Units: Lift hoists cannot be used to lift another unit of any kind during combat. However, a unit can begin the scenario transporting another non-infantry unit (infantry units are carried as normal cargo). A transported unit is inactive and so cannot perform any action. Note that inactive units cannot be made active in regular Total Warfare play; see Readying for Deployment on p. 44 of Strategic Operations for details. Mad Cat (Timber Wolf)– This is the poster child mech for the clans. The Mad Cat pairs two LRM-20s with two sets of ER Large and Medium Lasers. To complete the picture you’ve got a Medium Pulse Laser and two Machine Guns and 17 double heatsinks. This mech has a lot of long range firepower and armour, and is fast for a heavy mech as well.Several publishers obtained the rights to publish comics set in the BattleTech universe. These, and at least two magazines ( BattleTechnology and Stardate/ StarDrive) were considered official products in their time just like the novels.

Clan Invasion is nice to have, but of the three products I would get this last. You get a full Clan army (as Omnimechs are something you pay through the nose for), but you’ll inevitably want to branch out after a few games to add more Omnimechs or Clan versions of old Inner Sphere designs. If you are putting off committing to big rulebooks and like the level of game you are getting from the AGoAC box, then Clan Invasion is a solid buy to try the Clan era out, and to give you an Opfor for your Inner Sphere Mechs.

Puzzle Pieces

Importantly the core of the rules, movement, cover, GATOR (the process to work out what you need to roll to hit) and damage are all there making the transition to the full rules easier, as there is nothing to unlearn, just more detail to add in. Conclusion Communist Chinese/Soviet Union cultural template. A vain state of relatively few worlds but with a large population, weakened from a long string of military defeats and territory losses. Relies on nefarious scheming and notoriously ineffective secret operations. Hamstrung by communism and rampant paranoia. Described as cunning and dangerous in the initial setup, but depicted as irrational villains in subsequent publications. Almost destroyed in the Fourth Succession War, the Confederation saw a fantastic rebirth and went on to become one of the most powerful factions in the Dark Age era. The product of more than twenty years of gaming experience, Total Warfare presents the rules of the BattleTech game system as never before. For the first time, all the rules for various units that have a direct impact on the deadly battlefields of the thirty-first century appear in a unified rules set: from BattleMechs to ProtoMechs, Combat Vehicles to Support Vehicles, infantry to aerospace fighters and DropShips. Interwoven and meticulously updated, Total Warfare provides the most detailed and comprehensive rules set published to date for BattleTech - the perfect companion for standard tournament play. Meanwhile, WizKids produced a new Clix-based game in the MechWarrior: Dark Age setting, set almost a century after the current BattleTech timeline. A gazeteer of the worlds that compose the Republic. (Note: Not all worlds are fully described.) 3132-3134 INN 3135 PDA Journals 3136 LinkNet 3136 Levin’s List
