About this deal

Distilled and produced in Holland, AGWA de Bolivia is an "Alco-Jolt" made from the Bolivian coca leaf and contains Guarana and ginseng. After imbibing about two thirds ofa bottle, I started to feel a bit more pep in my step. Maybe I was just drunk and succumbing to the placebo effect, but there was definitely a small buzz of energy pulsing through my body. Its impossible to tell if it was from the coca leaf, or just the guarana and caffeine, but I did feel a noticeable change. As far as i can tell, it works just as advertised. Even though Agwa's not illegal, the hype's enough to get you high. And if that doesn't do it, the massive amounts of guarana — a plant whose seeds contain five times the amount of caffeine of a coffee bean — will. Even tempered by other alcohols in mixed drinks, Agwa's dynamite dosage of herbal caffeine could make a catatonic twitch. The taste is rounded out to create the most complex blend of flavours, handcrafted by one of the World’s master blenders. The final stage is to reduce it to 30% ABV with the pure, neutral grain spirit, water, lime juice and sugars. The natural green colour is augmented with colouring before being rested and testing pre-bottling.

People want to know whether the drink will make them feel like they're on cocaine, or whether it's as strong as absinthe or Jägermeister. The effects of the liqueur vary for each drinker, but one thing's fairly certain: It's a potent brew. This is not among the recommended ways to use Agwa... This isn’t cocaine, it’s just a delicious green brew making its way to the top bars and liqueur stores. It’s a non-toxic drink which is surprisingly energizing too. It is said to increase sexual potency in men. Well, this is not scientifically proven or claimed by anybody. It’s just what people experience after drinking it.

We tried AGWA de Bolivia both at room temperature and from the freezer. Room temperature AGWA de Bolivia is more herbaceous and spicy, while from the freezer it becomes a lot sweeter and citrusy. Curious about the "crazy buzz" and "funky flavor," I wanted to try it, too, but it was still relatively new to my friends and they only knew of one bar and one liquor store that was selling it. Turns out, Agwa's available at more than 48 locations around the Valley, including clubs like TT Roadhouse in Scottsdale, Shady's in Phoenix, and Tavern on Mill in Tempe, and at all BevMo!, Tops, and AJ's Fine Foods locations. I can’t really remember what happened after I finished the rest of the bottle, but I do know that the overall experience was a good one (related: vivitrol doctors). We’ve had it infused in other spirits (most recently a coca pisco, which is a traditional infusion) and it has a terrific and almost indescribable herbal, vegetal taste that is slightly bitter and slightly spicy.

Brad Henrich has been a fan of Agwa for years and says TT Roadhouse started serving it when it became available in 2004. But this isn't cocaine. It's the latest trend in edgy European liqueurs, a green brew called Agwa de Bolivia Coca Leaf Liqueur. But by 4 a.m., it was clear that I wasn't going to fall asleep anytime soon.
