About this deal

My cake pans all have a depth of between 3 – 4 inches (about 7.5 – 10 cm). You definitely want to use a cake pan that has a minimum depth of 3″ (7.5 cm), to allow for the rise. In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter at full speed until it's pale and fluffy, 2-3 minutes. You can also freeze the cake whole. To do this, refrigerate the cake until the frosting is firm, a couple of hours. Then wrap the whole cake in plastic wrap, twice and freeze for up to two months.

Whole Egg: I use whole eggs because I love the richer flavor it gives. Make sure your eggs are at room temperature to make sure the batter doesn’t curdle. If you forget to take your eggs out of the fridge ahead of time, you can put them under hot water. Flour: I like using all-purpose flour in my cakes because most people already have it at home. If you don’t use a digital scale to measure your flour I highly recommend purchasing one. Over measuring is one of the most common baking mistakes. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt until they're evenly distributed. Sugar: You can’t have cake without sugar. It provides moisture, flavor and structure so don’t skimping! I used just granulated sugar in this recipe but it’s made to be adaptable so you can make a brown sugar cake by just swapping the granulated sugar for brown sugar. Grease your flower nails. I hate all specially formulated cake release, and only ever use butter for greasing.

So, if you’re looking for 6-inch cake tins, 8-inch cake tins, rectangle cake tins or some standard cake baking tins, we’ve got everything you could possibly want to perfect your bakes. What to look for in a cake tin If the cake is fully frosted and unsliced, you can leave it on the counter overnight (unless it feels soft and unstable, then refrigerate it). The most common sizes of tin are 20cm/8 inches and 23cm/9 inches, though you can get smaller and larger sizes and an 18cm/7 inch tin is not uncommon. 3. Should cake tins line? The cake calculator is designed for the home kitchen, and all you need to bake the cakes is a cake tin, a simple electric mixer or mixing bowl, a wooden spoon, a spatula and a handful of ingredients. The traybake and layer cake make up to 40 servings, and the cupcakes and fairy cakes make up to 24 cakes. If you're baking for larger numbers, simply re-run the calculator for a second batch.

Bring a little water to the boil in a pan, reduce the heat to a simmer and suspend a heatproof bowl over the simmering water. (Do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water.) Add the chocolate to the bowl and allow to melt. Spread the melted chocolate over the top and sides of the cake. The 8″ should feed 12 people, and the 9″, 16, in small portions. If you can just imagine, first you quarter the cake, then you slice each quarter into 3 or 4 slices. You can make the cake layers ahead of time. For best results, allow the cake layers to cool almost to room temperature. When they’re still just slightly warm, wrap them in plastic wrap and leave them on the counter overnight. In reply to a question posed by a reader, how to know whether to line or not, as written in my recipe card:Are you planning to also fill it with jam and icing? As that would give it at least an additional half and inch. Then the fondant on top of that too. I know that still means there isn’t much cake itself. It is perfect for all birthday cakes, this is the cake I have been using all these years for my kids and all clients who want a decorated cake. The cake is heavier than a Victoria Sponge, making it perfect for decorating, as it will last for days, unlike the drier Victoria.
