About this deal

For an inspirational insight into using dry brush work, read Geoff Kersey’s article on how to paint coastal and countryside landscapes.

They are long-lasting, but since the amount of pigment you take each time is less, it is a bit more challenging to paint large-scale projects. These paintbrushes are pricier but worth the investment if you want long-term watercolor materials. And if you’re wondering which type of animal hair you’ll find, it can range from goat to squirrel! Mixed paintbrushesThe texture of paper you choose gives you different effects with the paint. Depending on your requirements, there are three main surface textures to choose from: Start with a dry area of watercolor paper. Drop a small puddle of water into your palette and a dab of concentrated paint right next to it. I used a medium-sized brush and a bit of green tube watercolor. The goal is to achieve a gradual change in the color intensity, resulting in dynamic, textured outcomes. Will you need to have a portable easel? (perhaps for painting out of doors) – If you will be then a sketching easel is what you’ll need. Sketching easels are usually made from aluminium or wood. An easy to carry sketching easel will be lightweight with telescopic legs allowing it to fold into a compact portable size. However if you are likely to paint in bracing wind conditions it may be at risk from falling over. Some string and tent pegs can be a great way to get around this. Half pans hold about 2ml of wet paint in total, so if you buy a small 5ml tube, you can get at least two refills out of it (or a little more than one refill for full pans).

The pigment number is the best way to match paints from different brands. For example, most brands have a paint named Prussian Blue, but the colour can be totally different for each paint maker. If you want to find the same colour from a different brand, find one with the same pigment number, even if the name is different. Watercolor paints are made by pulverizing pigments into fine particles and then mixing them with a binding agent (typically gum arabic).Watercolor paper is typically separated into two categories: cold-pressed and hot-pressed. Both are great choices, although cold-pressed is more common.

Just like many other art supplies, such as acrylic paints, watercolors come in two grades: student and professional. Professional, or artist-quality, watercolor paint is typically made with more pigment and comes in a wider range of colors. As student watercolors usually have more synthetic binders and fillers, which keeps the cost down, but they tend to have less permanence. The debate continues as to whether natural brushes rule over synthetic brushes but synthetic brushes tend to retain their shape better than natural brushes and don’t absorb as much water, giving you more control when painting. This easy method is a fun way to incorporate flowy, expressive washes into your work. Wet on dry Photo via Stephanie Bento (Tiny Workshops)Watercolor paint consists of pigments suspended in an organic, water-soluble binder, making it easy to thin and dilute with just a tiny amount of water. Winsor & Newton is one of the most trusted names in watercolor supplies, and its Cotman sub-brand is perfect for beginners. It offers the same quality the company is known for but at a much lower price point. It’s possible to use all of the 48 colors to produce professional watercolor paintings from the beginning with them all fitting into a ‘frequently used range of hues’ and I’ve found that after drying, the paint doesn’t lose much of its lustre due to washing…I’ve also found that a variety of synthetic brushes have worked well with it too. The most common way to buy watercolors is either in small tubes or in trays of solid paint called pans. Pans, which are only activated when touched with a wet brush, are great for their portability. As the amount of pigment you can take each time is limited, it's a bit more difficult to paint large-scale projects, but each pan will go a long way.

The quality between tube and pan watercolor painting sets do not differ. However, though you can reuse the paint from tube watercolors after it dries. It is more difficult to make it soluble again with water and thus will be a little harder on your watercolor brushes. Watercolours can be unforgiving and unpredictable at times but benefits of watercolour certainly outweigh the negatives once you get the hang of them. Besides, “happy accidents” can sometimes be spectacular! Synthetic brushes—which are made from nylon or polyester—are the more economical option. Not only that, but they are also easy to clean and maintain their shape after significant usage. The downside is that they do not retain as much water. It is free of heavy metals and mixes smoothly. These are produced in Holland with stringent quality control and are made for discerning leisure pleasure. It can also be washed into subtle nuances, and when thinned with large quantities of water, the color remains vibrant and lightfast. 2. Sargent Art 12 Count Watercolor Set

Watercolour paper is usually available in three different textures. Completely smooth paper is known as Hot Press and allows for the finest lines and crisp details to show. Cold-pressed paper has a slight texture and is also known as NOT surface paper. It is the surface that most artists try to begin with. The texture is made with sheets of felt, so has an irregular, naturally dimpled quality. Rough paper has a more pronounced texture, which acutely changes the quality of brush strokes, often making them appear more broken and expressive than on smooth paper. Although most of the best watercolor sets and paints will work well for this purpose, practice and proper wood preparation will be required. Still, you would need to swallow a large amount of pigment for it to be dangerous! Also, many companies have moved away from these pigments in recent years. Is watercolor paint washable? Less wasteful: If you are using watercolors in tubes and you accidentally squeeze out a bit too much paint it doesn’t have to go to waste. The leftover paint can be reactivated another time with a simple dab of water.
