About this deal

Set years before the saga of Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher: Old World explores a time when monsters roamed the Continent in greater numbers, creating a constant peril that required the attention of expertly trained monsters slayers, known as witchers. Five competing schools trained their adepts through brutal regimes, and once fully prepared, these now-recognized witchers set off to explore the land, seeking trouble and adventures and helping others for coin. The first player to acquire 4-6 trophies, with the number being set at the start of play, wins the game instantly. You can obtain trophies by killing monsters, instigating and winning chaotic tavern brawls against another witcher, training attributes to their highest level, and resolving certain quests throughout their adventure. A number of expansions are available alongside the main game. The best of the bunch is the Skellige addition, adding a sideboard of islands to visit. There is a real personality and identity to this new locale which adds texture to the overall narrative. In phase one they must move to an adjacent town at least once, discarding a card from their hand which features a matching location type icon to do so. They are free to make a single use of the town’s special activity per turn while there – such as paying gold to increase a character stat, ‘poker dice’ gambling, gaining a combat potion etc. – and can continue travelling around the map, so long as they have cards in hand to discard on doing so. Image: GamesHub Mages adds some interesting ways to experience the game, adding a little to the replayability of the game, but there's not the same depth that the Skellige expansion has. What Does The Witcher: Old World Legendary Hunt Add To The Game?

The Witcher Old World is a really good game. It’s not as difficult as it looks, there are a lot of funny moments, and while the turns are unwieldy and can take forever, it gives you an opportunity to socialise with the other people at the table. Old World does an impressive job of putting its players into the shoes of an amoral travelling monster hunter – although some exploration and quest cards can lean a little too hard on the ‘edgy’ side in ways that are at times cringe, and at others, outright problematic. Thank you for the really good summary, you bought up points i had not considered, i was pretty keen at the beginning but as things have moved forward Im getting a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach …. Now, did I enjoy it more because I won? Yes. Winning is an extremely satisfying experience. But I think I would have had a good time even if I’d lost. It’s all about the group that you play with and how invested you’re all willing to be. Of course, the more you play, the easier set-up gets, and there is nothing inherently wrong with a game that requires a lot of set-up. It is, however, just a good thing to be aware of.

A player in phase two can choose to fight a monster if they happen to be in the same city as one, challenge another Witcher to a duel or a round of poker dice if they happen to also share the same location, or if they already have a skill at rank five, they can meditate to earn a trophy on it, should that particular skill’s one trophy card still be available in the shared pool. Some of these big games with many moving parts can require your full concentration at all times, and some are good for providing structure to a social experience. The Witcher: Old World lands in my ideal middle ground. The difference between the Standard and Deluxe versions of The Witcher: Old World is the inclusion of 28 miniatures to replace the tokens in the standard edition. Both editions include miniatures for each Witcher school. The Witcher: Old World plays on a map with locations that fans of the franchise will find very familiar. What Are Our Final Thoughts On The Witcher Old World? If you enjoy rushing to buff up your combat prowess, and the combat focus of The Witcher: Old World, then this will add at least 7 additional games to the experience, but they can also be combined with the other expansions, providing a lot of extra replayability, if you enjoy the extra complexity of multiple expansions. What Are Our Final Thoughts On The Witcher: Old World Expansions?

Out of the 3 currently available expansions, Skellige adds the most to The Witcher: Old World in terms of depth. Mages changes up the player experience slightly and Legendary Hunt creates a combat focus to the game. All of them are interesting and add enough to be worthwhile individually, and combining them adds replayability, but Skellige adds a lot more to the game across the board with the new area to explore new events, and a new monster to fight. Should I Buy The Witcher: Old World Expansions? The aim of The Witcher: Old World is to be the first player to collect 4 trophies, and trophies can be won in 3 different ways, either by defeating monsters or other Witchers or by reaching level 5 of an attribute. Raising attributes is done at Witcher school locations, where players need to pay to raise them and to do that, they'll need to explore and defeat monsters to gain gold.In this competitive adventure board game, 2-5 players travel across a vast map, embarking on masterfully penned quests, encountering and making ambiguous moral choices, fighting monsters – and sometimes brawling with other witchers to defend their school's honor! Phase 2 gives you the choice between battling a Witcher or monster at your location (more on this in a sec) or exploring either a city or country location. Exploration is pretty fun because the player to your right reads out the card and gives you options to choose from without knowing the potential consequences. In The Witcher: Old World, you become a witcher – a professional monster slayer – and immerse yourself in the legendary universe of The Witcher franchise.
