Customisation – The Sony Headphone App makes the XM3 fully customisable when it comes to sound. But the Bose comes in more colours. With the feature on and “automatic switching based on actions” enabled in the app, the earbuds will switch between noise cancelling and ambient sound modes depending on what you’re doing at the time. By default the NC is turned up to maximum, but you can tweak this in the app. Even better, the headphones work with the motion sensors in your phone, and can offer different levels of NC depending on whether you’re sitting still, walking, running or commuting. Their audio skills are hugely impressive, too. These Sonys are wonderfully rich, thanks to bass performance that's full, but not overwhelming by any means, along with meticulous attention to sonic detail. There is an EQ available in Sony's app if you want to tweak things, but I am not sure it's needed. Of course, Sony has now replaced the WH-1000XM3s with the WH-1000XM4s and – spoiler alert – they're even better. The XM3s are therefore now the second-best pair of noise-cancelling headphones you can buy but, thanks to some heavy discounting, they're still an excellent buy while you can still get them. Connecting headphones to an iPhone – Linking your wireless headphones to an iPhone or other smartphone is usually much easier. Typically, you'll just need to head to your phone's settings menu and enable wireless pairing. When the headphones are turned on, they should appear in the phone's list of possible wireless pairings, and they should register as “connected.” When that's done, you're good to go.You can also choose how long you want it to remain active after speech to ensure the mode doesn’t close mid-conversation. The “short” (five seconds) and “standard” (15 seconds) options felt a little restrictive to me, but 30 seconds proved ample. If you’ve got a particularly chatty partner or friend you can choose to prevent the mode from shutting down automatically and manually end it by touching either of the earbuds. The WH1000XM3 also adapts noise cancellation automatically for your current activity, cleverly, and this is genuinely useful – it lets in a little bit of nearby traffic noise when you’re walking in town, or chatter directed at you when in an office. You can tweak each one for preference, or turn it off. The overall shape and look of the Sony WH-1000XM3 clearly mirror the WH-1000XM2 and the 1000X before them. Any why not? The original was an elegant yet ergonomic design that looked and felt good. But there are a multitude of tweaks that you’ll miss at a glance. This headset has been well thought out for wireless use. Equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 technology, it offers the best current compatibility with AAC, LDAC and even HD aptX support, which keeps quality loss to a minimum. One of the WF-1000XM4’s most useful features is Speak-to-Chat. It debuted in the over-ear WH-1000XM4 and works in exactly the same manner here. When toggled on in the Headphones Connect app, it automatically pauses your music and cranks ambient sound right up whenever it detects your voice, allowing you to have a conversation without taking the buds out of your ears.There are some features that follow over from the 1000XM2 and the original 1000X. These continue to be used because they’re just great ideas – and well implemented too. Despite noting the subtle upgrades, you're probably still asking yourself why you'd pay extra for the XM4. Well, here's one reason: they feature Sony's very latest audio processor – the DSEE Extreme.

Bluetooth – Most upscale Sony headphone designs will include the latest version of this wireless audio standard. This means that they will be capable of linking seamlessly with other audio devices (provided they are also Bluetooth-enabled). So, you can sync your headphones up with stereos, gaming consoles, and digital audio players with ease. Historically, this has been associated with longer charge times, but this isn't necessarily the case any more. More recent Sony devices can balance wireless connectivity with easy charging and battery times – but this definitely falls off with cheaper models. So if you do want hassle-free wireless audio, it's often worth exploring high-end designs. I’d definitely recommend making use of the Sony WH-1000XM3’s capacity for LDAC and aptX HD codecs. If your (Android) device is compatible, these codecs offer a higher data transfer rate, and the difference is very noticeable. Launched in 2018, the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones retain their excellent build quality, noise cancellation, powerful audio, long battery life, and intuitive touch controls - still putting up a fight against 2019's Bose 700s. You're getting one hell of a set of specs for your cash with this tried and tested model from a brand many trust with their tunes. The Sony WH-1000XM3 are more comfortable to wear than their predecessors, too. I took them onto a two-hour flight and didn’t once feel the need to remove them. At one point I even fell asleep wearing them; the last time that happened, I was wearing the Bose QuietComfort 35 II. I tried the Optimizer on the ground and the Headphones Connect app gave me a reading of 1.0 atm (standard atmosphere). When I tried it again at 35,000ft in the air, the reading dropped down to 0.8 atm. Clearly the headphones thought there was a difference, but I didn’t hear the NC behave any differently.When linking headphones to stereos, it all depends on how advanced the sound system is. If it can handle the same wireless standard as your headphones, there should be an easy way to pair the two. If not, you may need to buy a cable to connect with older stereos. To my ears, the Optimizer makes a difference in improving the quality of noise cancellation.

Finally, the Sony also swapped out the microUSB port on the right earcup for a more modern USB Type-C charging port. The last aspect of performance worth analyzing is the 1000XM3’s call quality. In several phone calls made with the headphones, the people we spoke to reported that we sounded clear – if a bit quieter – than if we had used the phone’s built-in microphone. This is likely due to the extra microphones Sony has embedded into the headphones themselves. The Sony XM3 represents a major step forward in Sony's “noise cancellation” technology. These headphones use adaptive noise cancellation to neutralise sounds coming from outside. This means that they actively assess ambient noise, and create waveforms which oppose it, so that the listener is totally cocooned and insulated. That way, they can focus on the music or podcasts they are listening to. The keyword here is “adaptive.” In older noise cancellation systems, there just wasn't the processing capacity to constantly change waveforms. But thanks to the QN1 processor of the Sony WH1000XM3 model, these headphones can take into account shifts from the outside world. Even with poor recordings, the sound is never too harsh while with the MDR-1000X you really had to decrease the volume. That said, while these headphones are fine for the occasional call or two they’re probably not what you’d want to use if you frequently make phone calls in an office setting – call quality isn’t as pristine on the 1000XM3 as it is on other business-ready headsets. Battery life In fact, many people maintain that wired headphones actually tend to deliver better sound quality than their wireless brethren. This remains a pretty good general rule, but it's less true that it used to be. Sony wireless models like the WH-1000XM3 manage to beat mass-market wired versions hands-down, and they throw in noise cancellation features as well. Being able to customise how much sound makes its way into your ears in those four scenarios is very useful, and the noise cancellation on offer is top drawer. It isn’t quite class-leading – Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds still hold that crown – but it was able to drown out a sizable chunk of the noise on a busy train full of jubilant England football fans, which is no mean feat.
