About this deal

A constant in the anime industry is that, in most cases the animated series are based on a manga, a novel or a video game... but there are special cases. Samurai Champloo is one of the exceptions to this rule. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (perhaps you know his previous work, Cowboy Bebop), Champloo was a great success, thanks for its excellent mix of action, comedy and hip hop music. And since this one was an original production, a manga was created to exploit another media. But instead of being a simple adaptation, this manga is totally original, with new stories Roman Album: Samurai Champloo". Dark Horse Comics. Archived from the original on October 14, 2008 . I would say the art is by far the highlight of the series. The animation looks smooth and the series has aged quite well. No complaints here!Macdonald, Christopher (October 22, 2004). Bebop was a trend-setting marriage of anime traditions and Tarantino-inspired cultural hodgepodge — it could be said that Pulp Fiction influenced Cowboy Bebop as much as Cowboy Bebop influenced Kill Bill — and Samurai Champloo continues in this meta style, taking it even further. Loo, Egan (December 31, 2008). "FUNimation Entertainment to Distribute Samurai Champloo". Anime News Network. Archived from the original on January 25, 2021 . Retrieved January 8, 2022. The main cultural influence on the anime is the music and associated subculture of hip hop. [11] Watanabe had been a fan of hip hop music from his high school years, citing his first exposure as " The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. He compared the samurai culture to hip hop through a similar philosophy of self-identity. [12] The use of hip hop also reinforced the series' focus on its minority and counter-cultural cast, creating a cultural reference by using one with the other. [13] Alongside his liking of hip hop, Watanabe attributed a large amount of the series' inspiration in the works of actor Shintaro Katsu, particularly his historical dramas. The narrative approach of the finished series was inspired by Katsu's notorious habit of directing projects without a set story structure. [5] The word " Champloo" in the title was derived from the Okinawan term chanpurū, with Watanabe comparing the blending of elements in the anime with the meaning of chanpurū. [14] The food depicted in the show was originally accurated to the Edo period, but eventually expanded to include anachronistic dishes such as okonomiyaki. [5] Jin: Jin is a reserved, twenty-year-old ronin who carries himself in the conventionally stoic manner of a samurai of the Tokugawa era. Using his waist-strung daishō, he fights in the traditional kenjutsu style of a samurai trained in a prominent, sanctioned dojo. Jin wears glasses, an available but uncommon accessory in Edo era Japan. Spectacles—called "Dutch glass merchandise" (" Oranda gyoku shinajina" in Japanese) at the time—were imported from Holland early in the Tokugawa period and became more widely available as the 17th century progressed. Champloo has great animation on par with Bebop, but it can be very inconsistent: one episode could have amazing action sequences and other episodes seem to be constrained by budget. This is to the same degree with characters: the main cast isn't necessarily as charismatic or meaningfully developed as the Bebop cast, though they are pretty funny. Music is good (for reasons entirely different than Bebop), though some episodes don't give it an opportunity to shine. Top Selling Anime DVD Movies". Anime News Network. January 31, 2006.
