For purposes of this project, we’ll use the 2″ x 12″ x X’ plywood. Determine how wide/long you wish to make the seat. Cut the 2″ x 12″ plywood to that length. Location: The location of your planter or raised bed is also important. You’ll want to choose a spot that gets plenty of sunlight, ideally at least six hours a day. You should also consider factors such as wind, access to water, and proximity to other plants or structures that could impact the growth of your plants. Not sure where to start when it comes to designing a raised bed garden? We’ve put together our 50 favourite plans and ideas. Make the seats with 2 supports for each plank, and nail these securely to the wall of the planter box. Then attach the seat plank and secure it in place with screws or nails and wood glue (if you decide to use that too). The seats can be sanded down and protected with varnish, oil or whatever method you choose. On to cutting the fins. You’ll be taking the remaining 2″ x 12″ x X’ plywood and measuring out your two triangular fin pieces. Choose a mattress based on your available space and comfort level. The solution was to build a movable “seat” that could easily attach to the side of the raised bed. It had to be strong enough to support my weight, but not put unnecessary stress on the bed’s frame. This design improves upon one I’ve seen in a book; where I’ve made it longer and added a second “fin” for more strength.
