This book was no holds barred in all departments. The afterward by the author highlights how graphic the book was for its times, but it still is. Put it this way, if it were to be adapted Rob Zombie would be the man to do it. However, the violence, sex etc all suit the story. So to answer the question the book delivers on its promises! I find cannibalism, graphic torture and human dismemberment just as funny and amusing as the next guy and thought that the author did a nice job of providing an authentic and detailed representation of the practices discussed. While I do not currently practice cannibalism, I did experiment with the lifestyle for a time in college. During this time I learned a lot about the “Same Species Sustenance” Community and met a lot of wonderful people, several of whom I still count among my close friends (as long as I am armed). Thus, defending the rights and the dignity of the cannibal community is something about which I have strong feelings.

If you enjoy a gore fest, this is one you'll probably want to watch, since there was lots of blood, body parts, and eating of flesh. The pulling out the the intestines was a nice touch. of "She Wakes" - has tended to eschew what is called traditional horror - vampires, werewolves, the supernatural, monsters, and demons - and instead has concentrated on more urban horror and real-life monsters. After a little research into the author, I was intrigued. Ketchum is An update of the Scottish Sawney Beane legend and transplanting to Maine and the Canadian coast, it has some promising ideas and a couple of effective sequences, but it fails to establish them or develop them properly. What's with the lighthouse keeper? We get a glimpse of a newspaper clipping while the opening credits roll, and one of the characters makes a brief reference during the film, but this history deserved telling properly, even if only narrated by one of the characters, and could have added real mythic power to the plot. But it appears the film-makers just couldn't be bothered. For the last 25 years, I have told anybody who would listen that IT by Stephen King is the best horror novel ever written. Right now, I’m not so sure anymore. This book simply blew my mind.The fact that Ketchum's work had bookstores balking is something I could have understood. Instead, I was told that changing the ending of my manuscript would make it far easier to get it published.

What makes this book so scary - and scary it is my friends: I was tense for the last three quarters of the book. It never lets up! - is the idea that you have these (hunters) killers who see humans as nothing other than food. You can't bargain with them, much like a carrot can't bargain with you to rather eat the peas. If there is no reason for them NOT to kill you, what hope do you have left? Sadly the story was wasted: it was extremely predictable, the character are more complex but Ketchum spent more time building them up and forgot the gore and disturbing scenes that were the strong point of the last book. Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty nasty scenes but they don't come even close to the cruelty and detail shown in Off Season, I found some of these scenes to be tuned down copies of some of the previous book. And yet, somehow, this all made the book amazingly wonderful! How? How can something so vile and so horrible be great? Simple. It actually put me in the story. I felt it all, I experienced it! I didn't read it, I lived it! Never, let me repeat, NEVER have I ever been so engrossed, involved and terrified of a book before and because of that it has become the best horror novel and perhaps the best novel I've ever read.

During the opening credits, we are given newspapers of the headlines about the family in the synopsis. They've been doing this for over two hundred years. There's a throw away line of dialogue later in the film that it is thought to be a lighthouse keeper on an island started this family and they've been eating as well as kidnapping people to continue the line on. Breakout Villain: The Woman originally appeared as one member of a cannibal clan in the novel Offspring and died at the end of it. Pollyanna McIntosh's performance in the film adaptation was so impressive the ending was changed as a way to allow the character to appear in future installments. The Woman later become the central character of her own novel and McIntosh would go on to reprise the character for two more films. In addition to strengthening family bonds, cannibalism is also a very effective way to stay in shape, especially if one makes a conscious effort to do their own stalking, trapping and dismembering. The fact is that obesity among cannibals is less than 1/10th of what it is in the general population. Plus, for those unable to participate in family hunting trips, there are excellent "home workout" vidoes for that can produce very positive results.

In a rural area off the coast of Maine live a tribe of cannibals. Over the decades travellers and townspeople have disappeared here, but these have been chalked up to the nature of an increasingly mobile, exploding population. People disappear every minute all over the world, don't they? It’s sad to think this author died earlier this year, but I think he will leave a legacy like few before or after him.

And before too many hours pass, five civilized, sophisticated people and one tired old country sheriff will learn just how primitive we all are beneath the surface...and that there are no limits at all to the will to survive. Plus, once processed through the digestive system, humans make a phenomenal natural fertilizer which provides further benefit to Mother Earth. I suppose Ketchum is best summed up by what Peter Straub once said of him: "people seek (his) books for the wrong reasons, but stay for the right ones".
