About this deal

And then we have the crime - or crimes. The dual thread of Middleton and Ridley. And apart from saying that both are well plotted and executed and kept me on the edge of my seat, I'm saying no more about either. Oh, apart from bot came to very satisfying conclusions. Lynda La Plante (born Lynda Titchmarsh) is a British author, screenwriter, and erstwhile actress (her performances in Rentaghost and other programmes were under her stage name of Lynda Marchal), best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series. Zaffre, LaPlante’s fiction publisher, will publish the memoir of the legendary Queen of Crime Drama in autumn 2024. I did not enjoy the author’s style of writing at all. It felt extremely stilted to me. The parts of the book in direct speech, flip from one speaker to the another with no indication of who is saying what and the actual dialogue felt like it had been written by someone with a lot less talent and experience than Ms La Plante! The sub-plot involving DCI Ridley is another great story and is testament to the writing skills of the author that she can include two stories of equal value in one book. This plot was very unexpected and kept me guessing throughout.

Constantly mentioning about how the man puts his mask on and then takes it off once his clients advise that they’ve all had their “shots” so no need for a mask…. Blah blah blah. When the book starts, body number seven is found, same method, but the killer has killed a sweet young student. Anna finds a piece of information that links the killings to a much loved (not to mention well known) actor. An array of players from trade and publishing gathered at The Delaunay in London on March 9th 2023 to celebrate Lynda La Plante’s 80th birthday and toast the announcement of her dazzling new memoir. To catch a monster and exonerate his friend, Warr must weed out the lies. But what awaits Warr if he uncovers the truth?

Publisher Margaret Stead said: ‘We are thrilled to be publishing the memoir of our beloved Lynda La Plante. Lynda is without equal – a born storyteller, brimming with joie de vivre. Her sense of humour, integrity and style are unmatched, and we have all been inspired by her. For years, we at Bonnier Books UK have been privileged to hear Lynda’s incredible stories of a life lived to the full, so it is an absolute pleasure to be publishing her memoir and to share with her loyal readership the life and stories of such an incredible legend of film, television and publishing. Not only will readers be thrilled and amazed by her experiences and achievements, but future generations will learn so much. This memoir, like Lynda herself, is pure gold dust.’ Overall, this is another good addition to the series. There’s a lot of ground covered in both cases and they are resolved well. La Plante writes novels and for the screen (she is most known for “Prime Suspect”, a television series). She has written the “Trial and Retribution” series, the “Jane Tennison” series, the “Legacy” series, the “Dolly Rawlins” series, the “ Anna Travis” series, some short fiction, and some stand alone novels. LYNDA LA PLANTE AWARDS

This is my first Lynda La Plante book in decades and sadly, I have to say I won’t be rushing to read any others. A compelling, clever plot with a brilliant cast of diverse characters. Utterly riveting' - RACHEL ABBOTT, million-selling author of ONLY THE INNOCENT A very poor rating because this book was an absolute chore to persevere through. This is the first book that I have read from this author as it was handed down to me and will be the last that I read from this author. For those readers looking to get into novels by Lynda La Plante, this section will help with that. It will go over the novels “Above Suspicion”, “The Red Dahlia”, and “Clean Cut”. She formed her own television production company, La Plante Productions, in 1994 and as La Plante Productions she wrote and produced the sequel to Widows, the equally gutsy She's Out (ITV, 1995). The name "La Plante" comes from her marriage to writer Richard La Plante, author of the book Mantis and Hog Fever. La Plante divorced Lynda in the early 1990s.Her first TV series as a scriptwriter was the six part robbery series Widows, in 1983, in which the widows of four armed robbers carry out a heist planned by their deceased husbands. My thanks to Bonnier Books U.K. Zaffre for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Pure Evil’ by Lynda La Plante. Despite the above and I’m sure they’re just my personal gripes rather than other readers, both cases are really interesting and immersive. I especially like the Ridley storyline which has a topical flavour to it and I enjoy trying to figure out what’s going on. The Middleton case becomes more and more compelling and takes a disturbingly dark turn and discerning the truth from the multitude of lies is a perplexing puzzle. The portrayal of Middleton and Amanda are very good and trying to figure them out, especially the latter is a fascinating element. There are plenty of good twists in both storylines to keep you reading on. There’s an intensity in the Middleton plot strand especially towards the end when you really feel the tension. Just not for me, I’ve read far more exciting murder/police procedural books by much less acclaimed writers (to date), such as Neil Lancaster & Charlie Gallagher that leave this book looking like a ‘Midsomer Murder’.
