About this deal

There are really two main types of fire proof paint; Fire Retardant Paints and Fire Resistant Paint also known as Intumescent Paint. Fire Retardant varnishes and sprays are also available. Whether it’s your garden shed, or your roof beams, we know that wood is one of the most flammable building materials we can use so fire resistance considerations are a priority when using timber in construction.

When choosing a fire resistant paint for metal, it’s important to consider ASTM E-119 compliance. Most of the time you’ll be painting structural steel, which needs to meet ASTM E-119 standards in the U.S. However, these paints and coatings are typically not appropriate for critical infrastructure like steel. For most projects that involve structural steel or other critical infrastructure, you’ll need an ASTM E-119-certified fire resistant paint. Fire-resistant paints work by creating a barrier against flames. Most of these coatings are intumescent paints, which work by forming a char layer on the substrate when met with flames. These paints are often applied to steel, timber, and plasters to avoid burning and destruction. This paint works by creating gas bubbles that strengthen the paint’s additives when met with flames. When used on steel and timber, the foaming char layer works to add time before flames can penetrate through the substance.

By limiting flame reach across any painted surface, it works by impeding rapid fire spread and providing you with invaluable time to escape a burning building. Fire retardant paints are a good choice for timber surfaces and concrete and plaster in areas of high fire risk like kitchens, around fireplaces or solid fuel stoves, they are regularly used in industrial spaces and public buildings. Intumescent Paint The product is non-hygroscopic and is suitable for both interior and exterior application, when used in association with the correct protective lacquer. Can be applied to previously painted or stained surfaces when used in conjunction with the ACS Adhesion Primer. Bear in mind that these coatings are not suitable for fire places, BBQ’s etc. They require high temperature coatings which do not react with heat but rather protect the surface from it. Fire retardant paint for wood

It is obviously very important that you buy Fire retardant paint and other coatings from a reputable supplier. Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment is not suitable for veneer, plywood laminates, wood-derived particle board or similar as it cannot penetrate. Zeroflame Fire Retardant Paintor Thermoguard Fire Varnish BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System is recommended insteadWith a variety of fireproof coatings on the market, it can be helpful to see which coatings are the most tried and trusted. Here is a list of some of IPP Magazine’s favorite coatings: FlameOFF’s Fire Barrier Paint provides an eco-friendly fire resistant coating that’s 100% ASTM E-119 and E-84 compliant. A water-based product, but HWAP/WB Primer must be applied over the HW01F first. FINISH: SATIN. For INTERNAL & EXTERNAL use. White or Coloured. Care must be taken to comply with the coverage rate, including allowance for wastage, as inadequate application will affect the fire protection. Now that we’ve covered “fireproof paint” or, rather, fire resistant paint, it’s time to talk about the types of coatings most commonly used for fireproofing.

All our products meet British Standard requirements and are issued with a certificate of conformance (our products now also conform to most European standards too). ATSM E-84/UL 723- usually just called the “E-84”, this is the most common fire standard. This test measures the flame spread along a sample to determine the predicted burning behaviors. When working on new projects or renovations, keep in mind that almost all facilities require an ASTM E-84 test.Complies with Classification B/S1/d0 of European Standard EN13823, single burn test (SBI) and EN11925-2 (ignitability).

ACS S92/FR is a clear or white, waterborne fire retardant coating for protecting timber and timber related products to BS476:Part 6: 1989 and BS476: Part 7: 1987 to UK Building Regulations Class 0&1. Once you have applied the 3 coats stated above now apply 2 coats of Flame Paint or Flame Varnish finish at a rate of 10 square metres per litre per coat, using either brush, sprayer or roller.

Increase your fire protection with fire retardant paint

You can apply Q/VFR coatings just as you would any other wood finish, using a brush, roller or spray. First apply two thin coats of (Intumescent) Fireproof Varnish. As above, this can be rollered on, brushed on or sprayed on to the surface at a rate of 6.5 square metres per litre of covering per coat, to ensure adequate coverage of the coating and to give the surface it’s required level of protection. There are also some fireproof paints on the market that combine elements of both intumescent paint and fire retardant paints. How Does Fire Resistant Paint Work? As well as protecting from the danger of fire, intumescent paints can be used to give a beautiful finish on steelwork. There are different finishes available, depending on the required look. A high quality waterborne intumescent paintwill give you a 30 or 60-minute level of fire resistance using just a few coats. A compatible anti-corrosion primer should be used prior to applying the intumescent paint.
