The film draws poignant parallels between the HIV/ AIDS crisis – which Goldin extensively photographed – and the opioid epidemic of today. When in an interview from the early 1990s, a young writer describes HIV/ AIDS as ‘a taboo disease in this society,’ his words resonate and might equally be applied to addiction, today. In the early 1990s, the majority of Disabled people lived in inaccessible housing, faced enormous barriers in the workplace and had no access to public transport. Rather than granting Disabled citizens equal rights by law, the politics of the time encouraged a charity model of disability, where the public was advised to donate to “help” Disabled people through fundraisers like the annual charity TV event, Telethon.

I do leave All the Beauty... understanding easily why Goldin would approve and co-create this particular framing of her own life, but less sure that it does justice to that life. More than that, I'm nervous about how many lives, from allies to skeptics to non-famous sufferers, Poitras and Goldin streamline or displace, so as to plant their focus fully on the woman who's usually behind the lens. Storyline

Goldin has stated that most of the film's footage and photographs come directly from her. Poitras expanded on Goldin's vision for the project, and chose to make a more well-rounded film about Goldin's life and career. These biographical elements include the suicide of Goldin's sister, Goldin's drug use and her sex work activities, which she had never previously publicized, as well as her art career and achievements. Goldin initially felt uncomfortable with allowing Poitras to control the film and the depiction of her life, but was happy with the finished film. Goldin said that Poitras was "telling my story in my voice, but it's not exactly my version as I would tell it. But she's been amazing into letting me have a lot of input into what's used and not used."
