Oil-based gloss paints more often then not are two-coat systems. This comprises of an undercoat, which is usually a separate product and a topcoat of the gloss emulsion. Some products such as Dulux Once Gloss are one-coat oil-based gloss paints, although this is a specially designed formulation due to the long recoat time of oil-based paints. Q. Is oil based gloss waterproof? As you may guess now that you’re an expert in paint thinners, you can use white spirit, turpentine and methylated spirit pretty much interchangeably. All of them are alternatives to each other. The pros are likely to have a preferred choice but would likely grab any of these paint thinners in a pinch. So the alternatives to white spirit are the other paint thinners that we have discussed in the article. Now we have covered the types of paints that are available, we are now able to discuss eggshell paint. Eggshell paint has the same amount of sheen as an egg, which is where it gets its name. It is a low-sheen finish that has more sheen than matt, but less than the mid-sheen finishes of silk, satin or soft-sheen.

You can also use a paint scraper and lay the brush on the newspaper, and scrape it to remove the paint. This can damage the brush, though, if you are a bit too heavy-handed. No matter the surface, preparation is a hugely important part the process. Before painting, you must ensure the surface is sound & clean. Because it’s water-based, this paint will also never yellow with age, making it a perfect paint for any areas that might not get a lot of sunlight, such as skirting boards behind furniture and the inside of cupboards. It also comes in a great range of colours, although mostly pastel or neutral shades. As a decorator, the question “which is the best white gloss” comes up regularly. It used to be a simple choice, but now the range of gloss paint products are exponential. We’re not just talking about more brands (of which there are many), but there are also different types of gloss paint. Although oil-based emulsions were previously used on interior walls & ceilings, that is one of the only surfaces where oil-based paints are not generally used. Oil-based paints are used on:

Wrong Cleaners – If you use the wrong cleaner to clean your paint, the coating will have a yellow time over time. Petroleum-based solvents (mineral spirits) and turpentine will cause a yellowish tint on the paint. Oil-based paint is difficult to clean up. It requires harsh solvents like turpentine or paint thinners to thoroughly remove it from brushes, rollers—even your hands! Plus, disposal is a pain. “The paint and paint thinner needed to clean your tools will need proper hazmat disposal and can’t just be poured down the drain. This would be a major hassle for your typical homeowner,” Lisa warns. There are a number of considerations when using an oil-based paint. The first of which is that it is better to use a pure bristle paint brush as these are designed for oil-based paints. This stems from the fact that you cannot use a pure bristle paint brush with a water-based paint as these can absorb moisture, meaning they are reserved solely for oil-based emulsions. Furthermore, oil-based emulsions can have a longer drying time and can only be cleaned using white spirit, which is not the case with water-based paints. It’s funny, a few years ago, Johnstone’s Aqua was widely regarded as the best white water-based gloss paint available. However, comparing it to the more modern Teknos Futura 90 just outlines its flaws. It is still good, but it’s harder to apply, can damage your brushes and turns yellow after a couple of years. For such a great paint, it’s disappointing that it doesn’t come in any colours other than the standard pure brilliant white. But the elegant, soft mid-sheen and almost velvety-looking finish make it perfect for any home. It’s oil-based, so brushes will need to be cleaned with brush cleaner, and as with all oil-based paints, you should also make sure you keep the area well ventilated while painting and drying. After it’s fully dry, any future scuff marks or stains can be cleaned off without damaging the paint, making it perfect for high-traffic areas. As well as sheen, paints also come in two broad forms; water-based paint and oil-based paint. These forms vary on the solvent they use to dry the paint, as oil-based paint uses solvents to dry the paint, with water-based uses almost all water. Oil-based paint dries harder, achieves less brush strokes and has more durability. Water-based paint on the other hand does not yellow when using white like oil-based paint, contains lower VOC's and has a much faster drying time of a matter of hours. These are key reasons why oil-based paints are used on woodwork & metal only, while water-based paints are used when painting interior walls & ceilings, as well as woodwork & metal. Through advances in technology following the investment of paint manufacturers to find better water-based solutions to gloss paints, water-based gloss can now match the quality of oil-based paint. Q. How long for oil-based gloss paint to dry? The reality of all paint brands is that the quality varies from paint to paint. While some paints may be excellent in colours, some perform better in a white shade. Due to the susceptibility of oil-based paints to yellow, finding the one that minimises yellowing is crucial if you are using a white oil-based gloss.
