About this deal

Glorified extras. Including Budgie and Fingers in this dump, even if they are fit. Essential but I don’t really like them tier Gavin Catherina "Cath" Smith ( Pam Ferris) – Smithy and Rudi's mother who first appears in the first episode of Series 3. She is rumoured to have had a lesbian relationship with the headteacher of Gavin and Smithy's primary school. She claims to suffer from narcolepsy, though Pam attributes this to her excessive drinking. She attends single mother support groups and has been known to perform lewd acts on webcam, having once accidentally exposed herself to Nessa thinking she was a man named John.

In the same world as Doris, Dawn and Pete’s presence is never done too much. Their amazingness works because of how incredible Adrian Scarborough and the incomparable Julia Davis are as actors – if you’ve never seen the behind the scenes special and witnessed their chemistry as mates off camera I suggest you do so URGENTLY. When ranking Gavin and Stacey characters it’s easy to see why these two are such fan faves. Absolutely golden. Poison dwarf! GOD TIER !!!! Nessa Griff ( Alan David) – friend of Bryn and Doris. He attended Gavin and Stacey's wedding with Doris in Series 1. Bravo then, to all involved in the show. Oh go on, all together now…“Meet me tomorrow, I’ll wait by the window for you…”! Neil Noel Edmund Smith aka Neil, the Baby (Lewis Merchant (Christmas Special 2008), Ewan Kennedy (Series 3), Oscar Hartland (Series 3 – Christmas Special 2019) – The son of Smithy and Nessa, named after both Smithy himself and Nessa's father. His middle names come from Smithy's uncle Edmund and Nessa's friend Noel from Hear'Say. In the 2019 Christmas special he is an eleven-year-old schoolboy. Stacey's mum Gwen is a cheerful character who loves her daughter and is known for making omelets! Sheridan SmithWhen Dave becomes engaged to Nessa, Smithy thinks that it is a bad idea as he thinks that Dave shouldn't act as Baby Neil's father. He tells Nessa not to marry him, she cannot understand why as it is her business, and not for Smithy to get involved in despite the fact that she can tell it is about Baby Neil. Ruth "Rudi" Smith ( Sheridan Smith) – Smithy's sister, also likes to be called "Smithy" in an attempt to imitate and irritate her brother, with whom she often fights. I’ve rewatched all 20 episodes before writing this, and I still couldn’t tell you what they actually do for a living. Something relating to computers – as Gav explains to Bryn after a lengthy tutorial from Rob Brydon’s Welshman about the importance of remembering ‘www.’– is all the show tells us. Because of course, these day jobs aren’t really important. What is important? That would be the bond that the titular duo has formed over countless work-related phone-calls.

Edna Sutcliffe ( Edna Doré) – Pete's mother, only seen once in the Christmas Special, where Pete forgot her and she stayed behind the bar overnight. After all, lots of shows have nice ideas and good actors, but very few of them ignite the nation’s interest to such a degree that two characters get to make a number one single with Tom Jones, while another gets to coach the England football team in a Comic Relief sketch. This is a show that almost everybody seemed to love, and I think a big part of that is the human drama at its core. What's the deal with Doris and Noel from Hear'say? I worry that he may not be able to satisfy her needs. As the show progressed, it spent more and more time in this central section where laughs meet big topics. In series one, Gavin and Stacey’s relationship showed us the ideal romantic timeline of dating, engagement and marriage. Meanwhile, Nessa and Smithy showed us the less glossy alternative: one night stand with someone you don’t even claim to like, awkwardly trying to avoid each other, unplanned pregnancy. So many funny moments that make Bryn and all his weird quirks so special. I think my fave Bryn moment ever is when he does the trial interview with Stacey for her job. Not sure if that’s because he traumatises her and it brings me joy, or if it’s because it’s hilarious when he calls himself “Declan… McPartlin.” Doris He is very possessive and jealous in his friendship with Gavin, to the extent that he expected a text from him every day of Gavin and Stacey's honeymoon and his emotional incapability to deliver his best man's speech. Smithy only had two hours to complete nearly all his Christmas Shopping, and went to Marks and Spencer's where Stacey is working, just so he can use her Staff discount. Harri, Caitlin & Megan Shipman (Gabriel Mitell, Martha Tregonning, Maddison Belle Platt) – Gavin and Stacey's children who first appear in the 2019 Christmas Special. They share names with Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Bryn on current affairs] “On HTV Wales this morning, they said Cardiff town had been literally decimated by a group of unruly school girls. Joking I am! It wasn’t on the news. Although, on the news, there was a story about a group of school girls who actually stabbed a teacher, which I think is disgusting.”

Less hard-working writers might think that two big comedic characters are enough, but Corden and Jones don’t stop there. Pam, Gavin’s mum, could easily have been a boring side-note. But instead Alison Steadman’s character is a bombastic force of nature, who’d pretend she was a vegetarian if it meant keeping the in-laws happy, mount a protest/BBQ against a pylon being erected, and happily start a race war with the Welsh contingent after a few drinks. She’s paranoid, overly-excitable and utterly hilarious. Deano ( Mathew Baynton) is a friend of Gavin and Smithy's. He works with Smithy and is known for being gormless and somewhat naïve. He learnt Welsh prior to coming over to Wales with the "Essex Lads". He wasn't at Gavin's stag, but got a T-shirt made afterwards when they went to the foam party. Among his idiosyncrasies is a fondness for drinking a mixture of equal parts tea and coffee, which he calls a "toffee" or a "cea" (pronounced "key"). Bryn: “I cannot speak the Welsh language. It’s a constant source of embarrassment to me, but Welsh is not my mother tongue.” But once Dave and Nessa's wedding day arrives (Smithy is going to look after Baby Neil until they return from their honeymoon), but Smithy decides to stop the wedding. He reveals that Nessa was only marrying Dave because it was an easy option and because she felt that Smithy wasn't around enough to support her and Baby Neil. And six months later he has migrated to Barry and has grown a liking to Nessa but it likely or unlikely they're a couple. Most of the obvious set-piece gags were left behind this week in favour of much more subtle humour, and rightly so. I had a good chortle at Dave Coaches' choice of wedding poem – WH Auden's Funeral Blues – but my biggest laugh was saved for the music played over the wedding montage. Anyone who sat and cried that day in 1987 when Scott and Charlene got married in Neighbours to Angry Anderson's Suddenly will have felt a special moment of nostalgia; everyone else will have been left wondering what on earth that crappy ballad was. This week's Big Questions

Hi, Morgan! The whole thing is absolutely genius. Where did the idea come around?

Doris: “She lives for the day she can change her name from West, what with all the connotations and what have you, and what does she become? A Shipman.”

Doris on dating] “The thing to remember is, don’t go giving him nothing on the first night. Well, no, not nothing. A kiss, a cuddle, a cheeky finger. Just don’t go selling the whole farm.” Nessa on politics] “This is O-Bama alright? Not to be confused with O-Sama. O-Bama. O-Sama. Very different people, with very different ideas.” He loves Gavin's family more than his own who are rarely seen on the show. His sister is Rudi Smith and his mum is Catherine Smith. He is always seen around Gavin's house. Ar Sheridan starred as Smithy’s sister before she became the ITV drama go to girly, and when she was still dating James Corden (cursed). I always enjoy her carnage, even if she’s a pretty minor character. Deano

After the popularity of it all, are you going to make Gavin & Stacey parties a regular thing?

Love him so much, and not to sound like those weird girlies on the internet who never really grew out of their Horrible Histories Mathew Baynton obsession – but he’s so cute. Aw. Not that funny but great in other ways tier Gwen Smithy: “I’ve been thinking about ending it all to be honest, suicide…big time. How many Nurofen would I need to finish me off?” Jason West ( Robert Wilfort) – Stacey's elder brother, son of Gwen and her late husband, Trevor. He is gay and lives in Spain with his boyfriend. He and Bryn share a rather awkward relationship due to some mysterious goings-on on the fateful fishing trip. Although the events of the fishing trip are never explicitly revealed, it is strongly implied that there was a close and intimate encounter between Jason and Bryn. When they attempt to explain to Dave the reason for what they did that night, Bryn says "It was freezing cold...and when you're that cold you-" before being cut off by Gavin entering the room. He is disappointed in the first series when Gavin and Stacey get married and he is not chosen to take Stacey down the aisle. He and Bryn eventually become friends again, something they are both glad about.
