The CGI elements tend to be rather variant in quality, and as perhaps should be expected given that one of Director Shinji Higuchi chooses all-digital monster effects, an odd choice given his penchant for keeping the original show’s music and style. The CG Ultraman even shows folds where the practical suit would. While allowing for creative leeway and wow factor, it’s also disappointing to not see Japan’s physical effects prowess, especially in a project that calls for it. By the end though, Shin Ultraman is so otherworldly, CG was inevitability anyway. Shin Ultraman’s distinctive Japanese superhero aesthetic does separate it from the west’s glut of comic book cinema. Like “Shin Godzilla” before it, “Shin Ultraman” reimagines the beloved Japanese franchise with a comical bent of commentary — this time centered on Japan’s newly established SSSP Kaiju defense task force, led by Kimio Tamura (Hidetoshi Nishijima). When a uniquely deadly Kaiju threatens the planet, the so-called Ultraman crash-lands on Earth to save the day.

Shin Ultraman actually spends as much time with the ragtag group of people known as the SSP Kaiju Defense Force as it does with our title The film is stunning visually. They don’t have guys in monster suits destroying train sets. But the CGI feels a bit like the good old after school battles. They don’t overcomplicate the destruction. The story allows viewers to enjoy the action without it feeling repetitive to old fans or alienating to a newbie. The plot gets into the sort of bureaucracy that would crop up with a government agency dealing with intergalactic monsters. This modernization of the tale also played out so well in Shin Godzilla. Just like Shin Godzilla, Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno created Shin Ultraman for today without disregarding our nostalgic memories for the series.
