Children would initially be given an overall level (e.g. level 4). Sub-levels were given after the results had been reviewed nationally. How do children progress through the levels? The scheme provides children with a clear (and colourful) view of their reading progression. They can easily and evidently see how far they've come with their reading, and so can teachers and parents. This helps to build reading confidence and means that children will always be reading books that are at the right level for them. As you will see from the chart above there are general guidelines about which book bands should be covered at each age group. Please remember that children learn in different ways and make progress at different times. It is possible that there may be seven year olds on book band red and five year olds on book band turquoise. Reading colour bands are designed to work with school years and provide a helpful guide to what children are expected to read through the phases of their schooling. Most reading scheme books for children aged 4 to 8 years have been given a book band colour by the publisher based on the level of reading difficulty. These colours (also used by Reading Chest) usually correspond to those in your child’s school. In 2022, fourth-grade reading scores declined for students performing at the 10th, 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles compared to 2019; there was no significant score change for the highest-performing students at the 90th percentile. Score declines for lower-performing students at the 10th and 25th percentiles (6 and 5 points, respectively) were greater than the 1 point decline for higher-performing students at the 75th percentile. Keep in mind these levels are meant to be helpful, not stressful. They don’t limit your child, but, rather, help them blossom into a fluent, excited reader. KS2 book bands are now firmly established in many schools as a progressive reading framework and a means of evidencing children’s reading progression. At each stage, pupils have a sense of freely choosing books that appeal to their developing reading tastes within a selection that matches their ability, so they are able to get the most enjoyment and a sense of achievement.

But at other times you can use simple prompts to help them, like reminding them to use their phonic knowledge to sound out the letters.
