About this deal

Klara does not know who her father may be so Tom and Sunny have to get her cooperation to leave the country while dealing with her complete faith in that country. It is a very precarious position and it comes across very well in the novel.

Europe is in turmoil. The Nazis have marched into the Rhineland. In Russia, Stalin has unleashed his Great Terror. Spain has erupted in civil war.In Berlin, a young Englishwoman evades the Gestapo to deliver vital papers to a Jewish scientist. Within weeks, she is found dead, a silver syringe clutched in her fingers. The other characters range from American spies, British diplomats, a wealthy British man who has interests in the Third Reich, local friends of Tom and his partner Lydia and so on. There is a real range of characters here and they all fit their roles perfectly. In historical research, this is an exciting prospect. In real life, essential. People have often asked me what application studying history has in real life. It is this: critical evaluation. History is about people, human behaviour, and decision making. Studying history is about sources and argument and lies and truths and informed guesswork. And I use it everyday. Nemesis (2019) – 1939 (August). As war looms, Cambridge professor Tom Wilde is enjoying a last holiday in France before the conflagration. But when a stranger informs him that a former student named Marcus Marfield is incarcerated in a French internment camp Wilde feels compelled to secure his release and return to England. Marfield, a brilliant chorister and history undergraduate had gone off to join the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War and was feared dead. But not everyone welcomes him home. As an international intrigue unwinds, the destiny of Europe and the world lies in the blood-stained hands of ruthless plotters. Only Wilde can destroy the conspiracy – but he finds himself in grave personal danger. As usual, author Rory Clements has done his research and throughout the book there is a wealth of historical detail. Various senior Nazis such as Fritz Todt, Heinrich Himmler, Herman Goering and his wife Emmy, as well as Martin Bormann, make an appearance and Clements perfectly captures the atmosphere of the paranoia rampant in Germany in 1941 with different individuals and intelligence departments vying with each other to gain the upper hand. Despite the Nazis' iron grip on the people of Germany, we find that there are still ordinary people doing their best to fight against the ruthless murderers who now rule their country. This a gripping spy thriller with unusual plot twists right from the start.Injected phenol - it was used by the Nazis in their euthanasia programme and as a method of execution in the concentration camp.” A young English lady works in Berlin to get important papers to a Jewish scientist, evading the Gestapo to do it. But just a few weeks later, she is discovered dead with a silver syringe in her hands. Then in an exclusive club in London, a conspiracy takes off that could threaten the very center of government. Admittedly, it seemed a bit forced to be sending Wilde on this mission and in afterthought it could have been any new character set away from this series but if you get past that then there was plenty of excitement and suspense whilst trying to stay hidden in sight with those pesky Nazi’s snooping around every corner. Clements characters are also incredibly well crafter, and you never know what to fully expect, or who you can trust to be good.I constantly felt on edge of which characters I should like and who I should not, and when the plot twisted and turned, I was frequently surprised with the outcomes, rarely expecting what was going to happen.

Main character John Shakespeare is given both cases to solve. Mary, Queen of Scots, is scheduled for execution and the Spanish Armada is ready to strike. Traitors and enemies have their heads displayed on pikes high above the London Bridge. It is a time of peril for England, where chaos and fear threaten to reign. Shakespeare must go into an underworld that includes a strange array of people– including his brother Will, the struggling writer. It’s fall 1945 and the British are adjusting to the postwar world. The end of the war didn’t result in the lifting of many wartime laws. Food, clothing and gasoline were still rationed and a lot of rationing wasn’t lifted til the 1950’s. Wilde has returned to his Cambridge work and family, but strange things start to happen to his friends and family. A strange submarine is sighted off the coast not far from Cambridge and people start dying from diseases like the plague. Who’s involved in the murderous plot? Is there even a plot? At this point, I felt like I was fielding incoming as the book’s plot and the characters were bombarding me. There were few characters who were who they claimed and almost everyone wanted to murder everyone else. To my mind, it’s always cause for celebration when a new book by Rory Clements is published, especially when it’s an addition to his terrific spy thriller series set in World War 2 and featuring Cambridge history professor, Tom Wilde. The emphasis on the nations being swept up in a fury of righteous politics rang particularly true for what is going on here and now. Distrust is breeding; and morals bent or completely broken, for the greater good.

Coming from a former British national newspaper journalist, Rory Clements (author of the John Shakespeare series), the John Shakespeare thrillers are historical spy novels.Set in England, UK, between Cambridge and Norfolk in 1945. Rumours of a Nazi machine is still functioning, people are dying, due to a Japanese biological warfare research lab. Plotting on British land.. #fiction FB is Frank Broussard. “US Air Force officer. Lieutenant-Colonel Frank Broussard, Flowthorpe airbase.” Frank was MI5 and Catesby’s informant, that’s why they went after Tom.
