About this deal

When they were first introduced the Nighthaunt were competitive but they faded a little with the arrival of the Elves (Daughters of Khaine, Idoneth and finally Lumineth). As an army they reward considered play and take a little bit to get the best from. Nighthaunt suits a player that is willing to take their time and wants to make the most of their opponents’ mistakes. As a powerful sorcerer-king he gathered many acolytes and followers to his cause, using his mastery of light magic to try and defeat mortality itself! Although Reikenor had vast knowledge and understanding of the energies of Shyish he merely attracted the malign attention of Nagash. [1]

Have you felt the chill of the grave rising through a faint mist? You enjoy painting pale figures stalking out of the horizon and falling on your enemy like the tide? Or have you read the lore and know that Nagash is the true inheritor of the World that Was and you want to join the right team? Have you decided it is time to up your miniature storage game? Behind the Daemons, the Nighthaunt also receive some very serious boosts in Broken Realms: Be’lakor, making this book a must-have for generals of the ethereal hosts. Slitter –Before piling in, nominate a model within 1″ of the bearer and roll a die. If it is higher than the unit’s wound characteristic then it is slain. Good for a guaranteed extra killed model, and might occasionally tap a Hero too. B+ Warhammer Underworlds Warband. As can be expected the same story is true here, due to requiring they come with the warband, the point cost is inflated to a point that makes the Hero themselves worthless. If you can even get one at this point, as they were in the second edition of Warhammer Underworlds which has since gone out of print. BattlelineThe Legion of the First Prince can draw on the unfathomable numbers of Be’lakor’s minions to grind their enemies down, represented by the Unyielding Legions battle trait. Prior to the Shyish necroquake, Reikenor often hunted the Mortal Realms on his own. Following the rise of Lady Olynder, the wraith-wizard has joined the Nighthaunts, leading processions on her behalf or following missions set by the Mortarch of Grief. So is his power greater than ever before. [1a] Wargear [ ]

In summary this is just a sample of what you could do, from the Vanguard: Nighthaunt box set. I would prefer to replace the HQs with a Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed and a Guardian of Souls for their warscroll abilities and bringing our Triumph into play (975 of a 1000 points). The biggest advantage of the Guardian is his ability to return models which transforms this list into a very frustrating defensive list with bite. A bonus command ability, you can pull a unit that’s already on the field over to your General and place that unit within 12″ of them and more than 9″ from the enemy. It’s not a great “oh shit” ability to protect your general since you can rarely place them between you and the enemy, but it’s good for emergency relocation if you want to capture a neglected objective or get them out of a tough fight. Command Traits No Subfactions – In a rather baffling decision, Nighthaunts don’t have subfactions like other books. It was a launch battletome so it’s likely they did not know at the time those would be so important. Add 1 to hits for the Lord Executioner and -1 to hit him. This would be…fine if the Lord Executioner wasn’t the focus as the Spirit Hosts are and will remain the star of the show. Death Stalkers

I’ve used the full Vanguard box including the Knight of Shrouds. This creates some issues with the choice of small heroes, for a 1000 point list I would normally prefer to use a Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed and a Guardian of Souls. Instead I’ve used Reiknor to provide some mobile threat and casting with the Knight of Shrouds. Poor Army Traits/Artefacts –As a launch battletome Nighthaunts have really mediocre army traits and artefacts.

A niche utility unit that doesn’t see much play. They can attempt to unbind a spell as a wizard does, gaining +1 to the unbind roll for every 4 models. And that’s it. You likely won’t have enough models to get more than +1 to unbinding without paying more points than they’re really worth. While they can also eat an endless spell, it comes at the cost of the unit taking D3 mortal wounds, something you cannot afford on a unit of one wound models. You have plenty of casters, let them do the heavy lifting. Dreadscythe Harridans This list is meant to be straightforward and adaptable. Everything is in a battle regiment to give control of priority, however there is an option to place 3 of the battle line infantry into Expert Conquerors and the remainder into a Battle Regiment. Expert Conquerors makes the infantry count as 3 models on objectives – the Chainrasp would count as 60 models. Our Preference is to go second to make your opponent come to you (keep out of line of sight if they have shooting) and hopefully get the double turn. You can also redeploy up to 3 units via Vanishing Phantasms into reserve before the start of combat and then set them up in ambush (9” from the enemy). Much better choices than your weapons, 2 go-tos for most tournament lists are here the Pendant of the Fell Wind and Midnight Tome. You’ll want to use Reikenor to clear out hordes, with his Reaped Like Corn ability helping him plough through larger enemy units, and Wraithstorm, a unique spell which works particularly well against units of models with a single Wound each. The Nighthaunt Vanguard set makes it easy to get into the army and gives you a reasonable starting position.
