About this deal

Other limited expressions include Balvenie Fifty, a series of batch releases under the Balvenie Tun 1509 banner, and peated single malt Balvenie Peat Week, which launched last year. 7: Monkey Shoulder Fans of the Glasgow Distillery will know that the new releases are not out of the ordinary – these folks enjoy a good cask finish. The majority of the unpeated spirit, both double and triple distilled, is filled into bourbon casks and most of the peated spirit goes into virgin American white oak barrels from Kelvin Cooperage, originally a Glaswegian company. But there’s a huge array of speciality casks here, including wine, sherry, Port, beer, Tequila, moscatel, Marsala, Tokaji, rum, and more. Knappogue Castle 16 Year Old is an intriguing Irish whiskey with an ever-growing number of notes that seem to appear and disappear each time you sip it. This no-peat, triple-distilled malt whiskey comes aged in both bourbon and sherry barrels, ensuring a well-rounded, slightly sweet aroma and a creamy finish. Monkey Shoulder: This is a popular blended malt whiskey that is made from three different single malts. It has a smooth and creamy flavor with notes of vanilla and toffee.

Other vatted malts include more than two single malts. The age stated on the bottle is still the youngest whisky included in the blend. Compass Box makes a number of these that we will discuss below! Blended In its simplest explanation, whisky is a distilled spirit made from cereals, water and yeast. The legal definition of Scotch, specifically, includes a requirement that each single malt whisky undergoes a maturation period of at least three years in Scotland. Blended Scotch (which makes up roughly 90 per cent of the market) is simply a blend of single-grain and single-malt whiskies. How is Scotch whisky made? Generally speaking, aging is an important process when making whisky because it gives flavor and color to alcoholic beverages [ 1]. Whatever value you may attach to regional stereotypes, Aberlour is what many people think of as archetypical Speyside: fruit, malt, sweetness and enough weight to lend itself to ageing in ex-Sherry casks. Oban’s Distillers Edition Single Malt is finished in Fino sherry casks, which elevate the sweetness of the spirit. It’s a must-try from the brand, especially with the relatively low price tag.Peaty scotch can be a very divisive issue for whisky drinkers. Some people love the earthy, smoky rush that envelops them from nose to finish, while others think it tastes like an acrid tire fire. There are different levels of peat, of course. Laphroaig, from the Islay region of Scotland known for its smoky scotch, falls around 45 ppm, which makes this a decidedly peat-forward whisky. The 10-year-old is a staple you can find at most bars and liquor stores, and it’s a solid choice, full of seaweed, vanilla, and grill smoke flavors. If you’re looking for something quite a bit stronger, try Batch 15 of the cask-strength version of this classic, which you can proof down as you like. If you have the money to spend, the extra-aged expressions are where the whisky really starts to take on new dimensions. When it reaches a quarter century of maturation, Laphroaig still brings smoke to the party, but a host of other elements come into play that aren’t immediately evident in some of the younger expressions. The Ian Hunter Story is a newer series of whiskies highlighting the life and contributions of the former Laphroaig owner. Book 4, the most recent release, was aged for 34 years initially in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in sherry casks (it will be released in the coming months). For something a bit more accessible, try the 10-Year-Old Sherry Oak, which gives a sherry finish to the core expression with fantastic results. That tenure has included the wholesale makeover of the Glenmorangie range around Original and a tight roster of finishes, alongside regular high-end and limited releases, such as the annual Private Edition bottlings. The distillery offers one of the largest collections of whisky in the world, so take a look at our list of Johnnie Walker’s bottles to discover the entire range of whisky from the brand. Macallan was founded on a plateau above the river Spey in North East Scotland in 1824, and quality has been at the centre of the brand ever since. The Macallan was in fact one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed, and since then the brand has built a reputation as one of the world's leading single malt whisky makers. The distillery is surrounded by a 485-acre estate, and the whisky really captures the atmosphere of the beautiful Scottish landscape and history of creating world-renowned whiskies. There are a number of expressions out there, but perhaps the most loved is A’Bunadh, a 100% Sherry-matured, cask strength single malt released in batches since the year 2000 – a no-age-statement success story from the days before NAS cynicism set in.

Single Malt can only be made with barley and water, whereas Double Malt includes other grains other than barley. Campbeltown– distinguished by their salt, vanilla, and wet wool notes. You’ll note toffee and dried fruit too. Campbeltown scotches, like Islay, are highly distinctive. Examples: Glen Scotia, Springbank, Glengyle So, what could this term mean? Let’s take a deeper look at what we could change about single malt to make it…double. Vatted or Blended Malt The wash stills have steam coils as their heat source and a moderate decline in the lyne arm angle which is attached to shell and tube condensers, while the spirit stills are similar, but are smaller at 1,500 litres. The size and shape were chosen to accentuate the fruity nature of the spirit. You might be wondering how triple-distilled whisky is made without an intermediate still, as is common in Irish whiskey. The spirit is run once through the wash still and then twice through the spirit still, and then a second time with the low wines from the previous distillation.Whisky is a spirit made from fermented grain mash. The spirit features various grains, which may be malted, including barley, corn, rye, and wheat. The process for creating whisky has changed little over the past 200 years including the makeup of three core ingredients — water, barley, and yeast. However, you can find single malt bottles that are single cask, single batch, or single barrel. These will be clearly marked on the bottle and are usually a little more expensive since they highlight a particularly tasty barrel! An amber-gold whisky, the 14 Year has mainly malt-based flavors with a focus on oak, spice, and fruit. It’s another sophisticated drink from a brand determined to pave the way towards single malt domination. Malts are still dwarfed by blends – which sell roughly 1bn bottles a year – but, from the US to China, they are growing fast and beginning, very slowly, to eat into the market share of the likes of Johnnie Walker and Ballantine’s. Single malts can contain whiskies from different barrels. However, it should be made by the same distillery.
