About this deal

Our verdict: We think this delightful gingerbread house kit is sure to putyou in a funChristmassy mood.It was by some way our favourite overall, especially in terms of appearance. We thought even professional bakers might get fed up with building this gingerbread house, though. You're instructed to hold the house pieces together in place for 15 minutes on several occasions, which we think takes some of the fun out of the activity. Use remaining ingredients to make a second batch of caramel in a large flat pan. Watch this VERY carefully because the layer is thin and when it starts changing color, it can change fast. When you reach the light caramel color, turn off the heat and let the heat from the pan finish the cooking. House edging- place a strip of white chocolate on the cake board, and place a silver coca cola ball on top, next to the base of the house.

But if your gingerbread is more of a blank slate, it can be a challenge to picture what to do with your icing.Meanwhile make the strong royal icing. Beat the powdered egg white with the water and lemon juice in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment until frothy. Gradually add the sifted icing sugar on a low speed until combined (use a damp tea towel around the bowl to prevent puffs of icing, if you like). Beat the icing for 5 minutes on high speed until very stiff. Before you start mixing ingredients, make sure you’ll have enough dough. The Serious Eats recipe makes enough gingerbread for one 11-by-15-inch baking sheet, so get that out now, along with some paper.

Once the gingerbread has cooled, transfer the pieces to a lightly floured work surface and cut out the gingerbread pieces using the templates, re-rolling the trimmings as necessary. Line the baking sheets with baking paper and carefully transfer the cut pieces of gingerbread onto them. Keep all the small pieces together on one tray. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas 5. Use a Christmas tree cutter to cut biscuits out of the excess dough – you only need 4 for the house but there'll be enough dough to make at least 30 trees altogether. Put the trees on a separate baking sheet to the house pieces; chill for 30 minutes. Bake the house pieces, in batches, for about 18-20 minutes. Bake the tree biscuits for 10 minutes. Cut a door out of one end panel (as marked on the template); cut a window out of both end panels using the small star cutter. It looks ornate and doesn't appear simplistic at all, with lovely textures and patterns on the gingerbread pieces and colourful, varied decorations included. Decorating the front can be a little more intricate with edible figures, icing snow, a gingerbread tree and sprinkles to contend with, so if a child is building this house they may need a hand with that bit.Use a paring knife or x-acto blade to cut out the shapes. Make sure to leave some of the excess dough around the edges, since this will help prevent the straight edges from spreading. Pop them in the oven at 350°F for 25 minutes.

Leave to cool completely on the trays. The cooled house pieces should be firm and hard to the touch. If still a bit soft, bake for a little longer, taking care not to burn the edges. Once the house was up we were pleased with its appearance, and we really had to fight the urge to chomp on the chimney, which is a Flake. Melt chocolate in microwavable containers on 50% power for 1 minute intervals, stirring after each minute until completely melted.Consider buying a gingerbread house kit with a base if you want a speedier, stress-free building experience. Decorate one roof piece: use a knife to spread icing all over the roof, then cover with chocolate buttons. Start from the bottom, then add the buttons in rows that just overlap to look like tiles. Decorate the chimney pieces with icing and hundreds-and-thousands. Wait until the icing is completely dry. The gingerbread house pieces in this kit are smooth and plain, so there's no indication of how you might go about decorating it. The instructions advise that you draw your design fully before starting so you know exactly what you're going to be doing with your piping bag. Path- cover the area in front of the doorway with white chocolate and place silver almonds in place on either side of the door, leading to the edge of the cake board.

In a decent-sized saucepan, melt the butter along with the sugars, golden syrup or light corn syrup, treacle or molasses, cloves, cinnamon and ground ginger. In a cup dissolve the baking soda in 2 tablespoons of warm water. Take the saucepan off the heat and beat in the eggs, milk and bicarb in its water. Stir in the flour and unsweetened cocoa and beat with a wooden spoon to mix. Fold in the chocolate chips, pour into the lined tin and bake for about 45 minutes until risen and firm. It will be slightly damp underneath the set top and that's the way you want it. You’ll need to draw and then cut out guides for the walls, roof, and sides of your house. If you make these now, you’ll be able to see how the pieces all fit together and you can lay the guides out in the baking sheet to make sure you’ll have enough dough for your design. Bake and cut However, we thought there wasn't quite enough icing to really go to town on the decoration. We'd recommend keeping the pre-made icing for another baking day and making a big batch of your own to ensure you don't run out. Now here’s where I have issues with Martha Stewart. Her caramel directions are way off and reheating caramel is likely to burn it. I made mine in two batches to minimize “reheating.”Add the butter mixture to the flour along with the eggs and orange juice. Mix well, then use your hands to bring together into a ball. Sprinkle a little flour over a clean work surface and knead the dough for a few minutes until smooth. We liked the flavour when we tasted it, but we found the texture dense and chewy. If experience and appearance is more important to you than eating the gingerbread, we think this is the best kit you can buy. Cadbury has released tasty holiday products before, so we’re excited to try our hand at putting together and eating a chocolate gingerbread house. Plus, the Queen of England loves Cadbury bars. I’m ready to start decorating! Where do I buy a kit?
