Bushnell are known across the golfing world for being one of the biggest names on the market when it comes to Distance Measuring Devices (DMDs), so every time they announce a new product we know it’s going to be worth a closer look. The new Bushnell ION EDGE combines functional simplicity with cutting-edge technology in an easy-to-use design with over 38,000 preloaded courses worldwide. The watch itself is also lightweight and compact, a big improvement on previous Bushnell GPS watches which have been a little chunky, which means that it is unobtrusive on the course whilst playing. I found the touchscreen itself to be quite difficult to use. It was not very responsive which made it quite hard work to navigate between the screens and input scores or use the GreenView.
There is certainly a lot to like about both. The iON watch from Bushnell is designed for those who want to solely focus on their golf, at a price that won't break the bank. However, if you are perhaps a bit more tech savvy, e.g. you use your phone often, then the Garmin is going to be more useful in your life. Both however offer superb value for money and will provide you the basics you need on the course for a very reasonable price. Which One Should You Choose

The ION Edge is a straightforward, easy to digest watch which does everything you’d need it to do out on the golf course as well as a couple of handy extra features such as the pin mapping and scorecard. Some golfers will love getting their hands on all this data – and you certainly pay for the privilege. Bushnell on the other hand doesn't give you this option, with the watch specifically designed for golf and golf only. Despite it telling the time, the styling is such that you probably wouldn't want to wear it off the course whereas the Garmin gives you more reasons to, including the more modern screen and overall look and feel. Value It's been pretty hard to recommend Bushnell watches in the past, which have generally offered fewer features than Garmin rivals at a higher price. Arguably, the most important aspect of any golf watch is how easy it is to use. There's nothing more frustrating than waiting on the first hole and not being able to link up your watch to the correct course and tee. Thankfully, the Garmin S12 doesn't have such issues, with the watch ranked amongst one of the best Garmin watches on the market. At the start, we didn't have problems locating the course on arrival, with the correct yardages appearing on the screen within a minute or two of beginning the setup.The error code indicates that your devices operating system has been corrupted. Most of the time it is from the device being disconnected from the cable without safely ejecting the device from your computer's operating system. ION EDGE also features auto hole advance and auto course recognition to get you out on the course playing in seconds, while added extras including greenview with moveable pin positions, dynamic green mapping and over 15+ hours of battery life complete this excellent value for money device. Do not use solvents (Acetone, paint thinners, nail polish remover, etc.) as they can degrade the plastic case of the watch and damage the internal seals. Once iGolf responds confirm the course update, make sure your device has the current course information by updating via the Bushnell Golf App. You must have your device connected to your phone via Bluetooth for the update to work. The Approach S42, launched in 2021, is a reworking of the Approach S40 but with some premium finishes, with rose gold, gunmetal and silver.
Getting accurate yardages is the holy grail for golfers, and it's now do-able straight from the wrist. But there's a decision to make if you're thinking of buying a golf watch: invest in a dedicated golf watch – or buy a smartwatch with GPS (and an App Store), such as the Apple Watch SE or Galaxy Watch 4. The battery life is excellent, with three full rounds played so far during my testing without the need to recharge.
