About this deal

Unfortunately, options for reducing its impact are limited. The Micro Dimming feature that analyses the image on a fine enough level to deliver enhanced local contrast didn’t make much difference. The dynamic contrast feature that adjusts contrast automatically in response to image content improved the clouding a touch, but introduced lots of brightness instability. so good for its money that it pretty much redefines the whole TV market in a single blaze of ultra-bright glory." So remember that these things are rarely as straightforward or as smart as they pretend. Persistence and cups of tea get you there in the end. The RS530K is available in either 32in or 40in and looks relatively similar in terms of specifications. It also has a 60Hz panel but the resolution is FHD (1,920 x 1,080) rather than UHD (3,840 x 2,160). Similarly, while there is support for the HDR10 and HLG formats, you don’t get the more advanced HDR10+ and Dolby Vision format support found with the RC630K. TCL's claims actually turn out to be conservative, though, as we measured more than 2,300 nits on a white HDR window covering 10 per cent of the screen. That's more - way more - than you get from LCD TVs costing thousands more, and way more than we've seen from any OLED TV. Even the new Micro Lens Array models, like the LG G3.

The TCL C641K does not include a separate One Connect Box. One Connect Box is a feature commonly found in select Samsung QLED televisions, which allows for simplified cable management. With the One Connect Box, you can connect all your external devices, such as gaming consoles and media players, to a separate box instead of directly to the TV. This centralizes the connections, reducing cable clutter and making it easier to manage and organize the cables. While the TCL C641K does not offer a separate One Connect Box, it still provides a range of input ports on the television for connecting external devices. AccessoriesThe LEDs themselves now use a high-voltage Mini LED chip designed to emit light in three P-N junctions in series, not like a thyristor gate or rectifier, but emitting light at all three junctions to amplify the available brightness, almost like three LEDs in one. This would raise the excitation levels of the quantum dot layer, the vibrating QD nanoparticles that create the actual light that reaches your eyes. The real competitors here are the two Hisense sets we used in the comparisons above. The U7K and U8K offer almost exactly the same features and sound solutions, covering all the available HDR formats and with good gaming credentials that match the TCL. The differences are with the peak brightness and tone mapping and it is here where the C845 betters both of the Hisense models for image detail and brightness. But none of these three models would be suitable for image purists and film fans. However, for gamers and mass market users with bright rooms, all three are worth a demo. There are a couple of other seemingly untweakable areas where the 65C845K cedes some picture ground to the TV world’s most high-end Mini LED stars. First, the set’s tone mapping processing sometimes leaves some of the brightest white or colour areas looking so bleached of subtle shading and saturations that they no longer look like natural parts of the picture.

The subwoofer, meanwhile, eagerly underpins everything with far deeper bass than you get with most TVs, while only occasionally breaking down into mild distortions with the most extreme movie bass lines. The TCL C845 includes an Onkyo sound system that really boosts this TV’s sonic credentials thanks to a 2.1-channel speaker configuration with 70W of amplification. That’s a surprising amount of power for a TV and is split 25W to each speaker and 20W to the bass driver built into the rear, which uses TCL’s floating bass design and a deflector lens to smooth out the low end. This suggests that the C81 QLED’s problems with standard HDR10 are down to its internal tone mapping – the processing it uses to ‘map’ HDR’s potential to the screen’s actual capabilities. While it’s unfortunate that the TV’s initial picture presets pump out unrealistic levels of brightness and colour with HDR10 sources that go far beyond what the screen can actually handle, there are things you can do to salvage the situation. What all this translates to is one of the strangest out-of-the-box picture performances I’ve seen – even if most of the initial foibles can be circumvented with a bit of judicious tweaking. The Google TV smart platform is easy to set up, responsive in operation, and includes all the main streaming services. The Onkyo speaker system is excellent for a modern TV and means you don’t need to automatically upgrade the audio with a soundbar. The design and build quality are also generally good, and the connectivity is excellent with two HDMI 2.1 inputs. You also want a set that handles all the available HDR formats, Dolby and dts audio as well as at least two HDMI 2.1 ports, gaming features like VRR, eARC for use with a soundbar and decent Smarts.
