I’m much more than a musical memory machine, though. A Japanese TV company played me sounds once, very quietly: the rattle of a key in the door, a bus going past, birdsong. While super skills and micro-skills might feel abstract, there are some key benefits to framing a candidate evaluation through this lens. First and foremost, super skills and micro-skills are above bias: they transcend race, gender, age, and socioeconomics. No matter where a candidate went to school or how well they performed in class, every individual has a unique set of super skills and micro-skills. Assessments designed to evaluate these two skills categories can overcome human bias inherent in resumes and interviews. Every applicant who goes through a Talent Trial has an equal chance to show their ability, regardless of what their resume says. A surgeon will need to know how to do the various operations and procedures applicable to their specialty. Other examples of hard skills include speaking a foriegn language, knowing how to use a computer program, typing speed, and having a certain degree or training. On World Children’s Day, the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is launching ‘Super Skills’, the next phase of its ‘Listen First’ initiative, supporting evidence-based drug use prevention to raise happy, healthy children. National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) is providing this Super Skills online training course in partnership with EQUIP on early years development training. Practitioners will gain a greater understanding and enhance their knowledge in key areas of child development, enabling them to improve the development potential of all children within their setting. Through activities and resources you will develop your knowledge and skills to help support the work you do in practice. For me it’s all about arithmetic, sums and numbers. I never went on to study higher level maths. I spend my life working to inspire kids to engage in the subject at that basic level, the point at which so many disconnect. That’s also how I keep myself interested – for me there’s no mental challenge in the arithmetic everyone else has to think hard for; it’s all about thinking of new and exciting educational ideas. Soft skills are more universal skills applicable to doing well in just about any job. These include how well you can express your ideas, having good people skills, and how well you cope with stress. While soft skills are less tangible, they are no less important than hard skills.
