About this deal

All in all, the SRH440 is vastly inferior in this regard to close competitors like the MDR-7506 for example, which utilizes metal for the headband rather than a cheap-feeling plastic. Comfort The SRH440 headphones are suited for use both at home or in the studio. Impedance, power handling and sensitivity are all calibrated for professional audio devices such as DJ mixers, mixing consoles and headphone amplifiers._ Earpads will get hot and sweaty after a while. They are big enough but not deep enough. They are replaceable, however.

A tad too shouty for my tastes, but far less offensive tonal characteristics than the average estat. In my very brief experience with the originals they were both surprisingly listenable. They were a slight letdown on build and comfort so alas I never owned either pair myself. Mostly neutral, slight bass lift, highly resolving and natural both in tone and timbre. The world's best headphone. Comfort is about on par with the 440, as is construction although I feel like the 280 is more robust.

Moving into the treble, it also stands out here, but not in a way that feels overly sibilant or bright. Mid/upper bass ruins the sound which has otherwise good midrange-treble balance. Very uncomfortable to wear due to non-swivel cups. Needs a little more upper midrange to balance out the honkiness. Good dynamic performance especially in the bass.Great, I’m not telling you to. My work on measurements is separate from my reviewing work. It takes me 5 minutes to measure a headphone, you honestly think I don’t have time to listen to it as well? ↓↓↓ READ THIS: Notes & Disclaimers ↓↓↓ By far the best quality about the 440 is its sound profile which is mostly neutral across the board save for the bass which does have a 5-7dB shelf across 20Hz to about 100. Forward, in-your-face sound that's shouty and thin at the same time. A good reference for "true DF neutral". Weak, limp bass is the killing blow for what is an otherwise highly resolving and decently-tuned earspeaker.

Imaging as expected of an earspeaker configuration; surprisingly good tonality and expected bad extension. Certainly a "mini-HD800" in terms of tonality only, however still far inferior in technical ability. The positions are not set in stone. I’m only human; I may miss out on certain details or traits that may only be apparent with repeated listening. Expect changes. Bass does not have heaps of quantity but is rich in quality it does not seem to slow the way many of its competitors do and while, as mentioned, it doesn't slam as hard as you will find on more fashion-orientated phones it still reaches satisfying levels for audio purists. It feels crisp, open, and clear, with very good separation and a pretty decent Soundstage for a closed headphone IMO. An even darker HD6X0. A comparatively muffled mess just barely propped up by its decent resolving ability. Suffers from typical estat timbre and bass extension issues, but otherwise a very resolving and well-tuned headphone. Poor sound reproduction with strange peaks and valleys in the signature. More on that in the review. Great tonality, sub-focused bass emphasis, bassy without being muddy. Average imaging and resolution.

This list is meant to be used as a reference point. I highly recommend against blind-buying and suggest to have a listen to the headphones yourself. By all means, use this to shortlist what you should try in the future but don’t take it as gospel. The padded headband and ear cups of the SRH440 provide comfort suitable for hours of uninterrupted use._ As with the 7506, you’re getting a coiled cable, but here it’s detachable and not nearly as annoying as that one is. Simply inferior to its younger brother TH02. Very dull and muddy presentation. The model uses the same ear cups as TH02 but contains different drive units. The driver may have better components but execution must be bad. Not worth the asking price. I’d go out on a limb and say the 440 is one of the most recommended studio headphones on the planet, and certainly should be considering what it has to offer.

Material and handling

As far as to even sound across the spectrum, the 440s are a solid option at this price point and definitely worth a look. Final Word The issue, if there is one, is that the range above about 1khz is elevated compared to the bass and lower midrange. This is particularly noticeable on vocals, where singers often sound a bit light or thin. This discontinuity isn’t very big, so the results remain musically involving, but this isn’t the most neutral headphone you can buy. Interestingly, neutral tonal balance is a strength of the SRH840, so give Shure a gold star for market segmentation. Extremely uneven tuning, mediocre resolution, not a great choice unless you only want a wide soundstage. With enough requests, a headphone may also be tested with a different (typically more expensive) amplifier. If the community deems this amplifier as “necessary” for said headphone, the price of the amplifier will also be added to the MSRP value and valued accordingly.
