But The Silver Way is on a whole other level. It’s a must-own for any serious character artist, vis dev artist, animator, comic artist… pretty much anyone working(or hoping to work) in entertainment art. The Silver Way is absolutely worth the money and it’ll teach you how to design believable, industry-level character designs from start to finish. Stephen’s writing style is also pretty easy to digest and you’ll carry his tips with you for life. The Silver Route allows you to visit some of the most beautiful places in Spain, such as Seville, Zafra, Mérida, Cáceres, Salamanca, or Zamora. Another favourite passage of the book is a fascinating short diversion describing the invasion proposals made by several hawkish Spaniards in the late sixteenth century. Taking the Americas hadn’t been too hard, so why not a replay in China? This assertion is not fully explained, and is I think an overreach, a constant temptation when looking at history with one particular focus. I was familiar with the story of the Manila galleons and silver, so for me the most interesting part of the book was the descriptions of Mexico. I hadn’t realized how prosperous and cosmopolitan it had been. If you travel in spring, take advantage of the cherry blossom in the Jerte Valley.
