About this deal

The most conspicuous characteristic of the male narwhal is a single long tusk, which is in fact a canine tooth [19] [20] that projects from the left side of the upper jaw, through the lip and forms a left-handed helical spiral. The tusk grows throughout life, reaching a length of about 1.5 to 3.1m (4.9 to 10.2ft). It is hollow and weighs around 10kg (22lb). About one in 500 males has two tusks, occurring when the right canine also grows out through the lip. Only about 15 per cent of females grow a tusk, [21] which typically is smaller than a male tusk, with a less noticeable spiral. [22] [23] [24] There is only one known case of a female growing a second tusk; the specimen (right) was collected in 1684. [25] Surveys of narwhals in spring at the Scoresby Sound polynia will be conducted in May 2022 and a survey of narwhal abundance along East Greenland (including Scoresby Sound and south to Umivik) is also planned for August 2022. NORWAY The white whales, dolphins (Delphinidae) and porpoises (Phocoenidae) together comprise the superfamily Delphinoidea, which are of likely monophyletic origin. Genetic evidence suggests the porpoises are more closely related to the white whales and that these two families constitute a separate clade which diverged from the rest of Delphinoidea within the past 11million years. [13] Fossil evidence shows that ancient white whales lived in tropical waters. They may have migrated to Arctic and sub-Arctic waters in response to changes in the marine food chain during the Pliocene. The narwhal can reach up to 30 feet long, a full third of which consists of just the tusk. It can also weigh around 1.5 tons. The name of the species derives from the Old Norse word nar, which means corpse. This is a reference to the animal’s pale skin. An alternative name for the species is narwhale or narwhal. A narwhal is a type of small- or medium-sized whale with a gigantic tusk protruding from its head. It is the only living member of its genus. Larsen, F., Heide-Jørgensen, M.P., Martin, A.R., Born, E.W. (1994). Line-transect estimation of abundance of narwhals (Monodon monoceros) in Scoresby Sund and adjacent waters. Meddelelser om Grønland, Bioscience, 39, 87-91.

Estimating the abundance of narwhals is difficult due to the remoteness and large size of their distribution area, the mobility of the animals, and their close association with sea ice. Aerial surveys are most commonly used. However, the results must be corrected for both whales that are at the surface but missed by observers, and those that are below the surface/out of sight when the survey airplane is overhead. Another problem is that direct comparisons between surveys are not always possible, since surveys rarely have the same timing or cover the same area. The last aerial surveys for narwhals in Greenland were carried out in 2019 in Inglefield Bredning and Melville Bay in Northwest Greenland. Aerial surveys for narwhals in East Greenland were planned for the area around Ittoqqortoormitt in the spring of 2020, but have been postponed to 2022 due to COVID-19. Verne, J. (1870). Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (PDF). Pierre-Jules Hetzel. p.10. Archived from the original (PDF) on 13 January 2015 . Retrieved 22 March 2014. Specific issues that affect narwhals include poaching and overfishing, but the topic is not as straightforward as you might think. Whaling Threatens Narwhals Commercial fisheries threaten the existence of much marine life, including the unicorns of the sea.

The advice from NAMMCO SC in 2022 suggests that 55 narwhals can be hunted annually in Inglefield Bredning and that a harvest at that magnitude will allow the population to increase at a probability of 70%. EAST GREENLANDDid you know that a narwhal’s “tusk” is actually a long, spiral tooth? It protrudes from male narwhals’ upper jaws. While its exact purpose is not fully understood, scientists’ research shows it may play a role in communication, navigation, hunting or mate selection. Despite its impressive size, the tusk is actually a sensitive sensory organ, containing millions of nerve endings that can detect changes in water temperature, pressure and salinity. During the summer, narwhals apparently feed little; hence the stomachs of narwhals harvested at this time of year are often empty (Garde et al. 2021). They begin to feed more heavily in the autumn during migration and especially during the winter at their deep-water wintering grounds. In Baffin Bay, the winter diet is dominated by the Greenland halibut ( Reinhardtius hippoglossoides ) (Laidre and Heide-Jørgensen 2005b). To access this bottom-dwelling species, narwhals must make repeated dives to depths of between 800 and 1,600 m. Each dive takes up to 25 minutes, with about half of that spent near the bottom (Laidre et al. 2003, 2004).
