Buzz quotes a number of lines that he (and Utility Belt Buzz from Toy Story 2) originally said in the Toy Story franchise (besides his signature catchphrase, "To infinity and beyond"). Darby is seen wearing a Space Ranger uniform that belonged to a ranger named Tempus, a nod to one of Buzz's earlier names Tempus from Morph. In addition, for the IMAX version, there are nearly 30 minutes of scenes that were produced in the nearly IMAX standard ratio, which is the 1.43:1 aspect ratio, making the film the first Pixar film to have selected scenes to be produced in this ratio. In a mid-credits scene, Burnside is sitting in his office looking over papers when a giant insect is zapped by the laser forcefield, something that makes him very proud.

Contrary to what casual audiences might think, Lightyear will not be about the same Buzz Lightyear toy that audiences have followed since Toy Story's release in 1995. Instead, Pixar's newest film will opt for a meta approach by telling the story of the fictional Space Ranger that would eventually inspire the line of Buzz Lightyear toys in the Toy Story universe. That is why Buzz looks and sounds so different from the Tim Allen version. Even still, the appearance of what appears to be a redesigned Emporer Zurg in the trailer reveals that at least some elements of the toy’s mythology—also known as the text behind the box—will be incorporated into Lightyear. This is the first Pixar film of the 2020s to be produced in a 2:39:1 aspect ratio (for non-IMAX theaters), since Soul, unlike Luca and Turning Red, which were produced in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The film has received criticism from some who have argued that the film's scene with a same-sex kiss, as well as Alisha Hawthorne's relationship with her partner, is inappropriate for children. This was contested by the scene showing support from both fans and Pixar employees, as well as helping the film reach more notoriety. Sox is Buzz’s personal companion and provides the humor throughout the movie. Initially, the space ranger doesn’t want to deal with the cat, but the pair ends up developing a close bond. The cat proves himself to be extremely useful, resourceful and very loyal. Sox is even instrumental in helping Buzz get a good night’s sleep, apparently suggesting playing peaceful sounds like whale and white noises to help the space ranger sleep. Sox may have been inspired by Chris Evans’ dog.

James Brolin is the father of Josh Brolin, who starred alongside Chris Evans and Taika Waititi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Evans and Waititi played Steve Rogers/Captain America and Korg, whilst Brolin played Thanos. Waititi also directed Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. Toy Story: "Buzz Lightyear to Star Command. Come in, Star Command. Star Command, come in. Why don't they answer?"

In February 2019, Tim Allen expressed interest in doing another film as he "did not see any reason why they would not do it". On The Ellen DeGeneres Show that May, Tom Hanks said that Toy Story 4 would be the final installment in the franchise, but producer Mark Nielsen disclosed a possibility of a fifth film, as Pixar was not ruling out that possibility. This is also the third overall animated Disney production to feature a same-sex couple kissing, after The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder episode " Father Figures" and The Owl House episode " Clouds on the Horizon". When Alisha catches Buzz doing a mission log, she tells him nobody ever listens to them. In Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, Warp Darkmatter made the same remark about mission logs. The camera pulling away from Sox and in between Buzz's legs, then pulling up to see Buzz in a heroic pose is a nod to his introduction in Toy Story. I tell myself in my brain [Pixar creators] made him those colors to model after Dodger,” Evans told ET Canada, referring to Sox’s appearance. “When I first saw Sox, I said ‘you know aside from the fact that he’s a cat, all I see is Dodger.”Lightyear premiered on June 8, 2022 and was theatrically released in the United States on June 17, 2022 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, in RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, and IMAX formats. It is the first theatrical release for Pixar in two years, since Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were assigned direct-to-streaming releases on Disney+ in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the thing that made Sox so fun and special is that he clearly has a personality. At one point, Sox makes it clear that even he thinks he has made a mistake when it comes to being at Buzz’s side as he tells him, Adorned in brand new upgraded armor, Buzz and his team prepare for their next mission. Buzz and Izzy admire a statue of Alisha before continuing to their brand new ship. Buzz, Izzy, Mo, Darcy, and Sox get set for a brand new adventure with their motto, "To Infinity and Beyond!" In an early version of Lightyear, Sox was originally going to look and act way more cat-like (according to concept art) in which he would look more true-to-the-word to real life ginger cats; in addition, he also had no collar, had yellow eyes, and his body and tail had stripes. According to storyboard artist Dean Heezen, some additional cat-like things Sox could’ve done was stretch, stand on hind legs, ambush, and itch. He would’ve also coughed up hairballs, and he also would’ve had retractable claws and actual fangs. He even had tapidum lucidum, aka Night Vision (an animal's way of seeing in the dark) whenever Buzz or if any of the Junior Zap Patrol shone a bright light on him. [1]

Buzz and the crew manage to safely land the ship, but they blow out a fuel cell. Izzy directs the group to a nearby mining facility to get a spare part. This is the ninth and final Pixar film to feature the full 2011 Disney opening logo as a closing logo after Finding Dory, Cars 3, Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red.
