About this deal

I got my start in BT with second edition, so I painted this Warhammer brown in homage to the one on the cover of that glorious box set. You will invariably have a few of these Good Boi Awards on your Marines, and I like to give them a magenta hue to keep them distinct from red details. Sometimes I also use the Purity Seal Wax technique on weapon hilts if I’m feeling spicy. I keep the scrolls desaturated to help them stand out from any robes, and this technique also works well for any other scrollwork they may have. The Calgar Blue paint from Citadel Colour is a high-quality acrylic paint that is perfect for miniature painting. It’s a deep, rich blue color that can be used as a base coat to create a striking foundation for any miniature painting project. The paint’s matt finish and smooth consistency make it easy to work with and provide excellent coverage, making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced painters. It is a versatile colour that can be used on a variety of miniatures and is a must-have in any painter’s palette, for those looking for a shade of blue with a bit more depth than Lothern Blue. What armies to paint with Calgar Blue Here’s a god-tier example from Reddit that shows this technique in action (although note the painter uses multiple edge highlight colors, just not on the camo areas). Look at the edges on the Bolter — they’re all tan, and it’s amazing. Ditto this Warhammer TV video, where Duncan uses a single tan to drybrush the entire tank, including the camo sections that aren’t brown.

Blue-grey: Thunderhawk Blue (note that this is a layer paint) >Nuln Oil pin wash> Russ Grey > Fenrisian Grey For the insignia if you haven’t been blessed with the secrets to applying transfers I will outline it for you here.

The Ultramarines may be the boy scouts of the Adeptus Astartes but they’re far from boring, with lots of unique characters and opportunities for interesting heraldry and special elements like laurel wreaths and cloth. They’re a rewarding faction to paint and play and unique in that regardless of what model you buy, you can always reference the box art for an example of a well painted model. Emma: Regally vibrant, Luxion Purple keeps a bright tone even in the darker areas of your miniatures – great for Hedonites of Slaanesh and the Emperor’s Children . This is my favourite purple Contrast of all time! Emma: I’ve been painting for many years, and Contrast is one of the most fun and versatile paint ranges I’ve worked with. They are easy and fun to use, making armies faster than ever to paint. Our Guide to Painting Space Marine Heraldry the Codex Astarteshas everything you need to know about painting Codex Compliant chapters, with a particular focus on the Ultramarines. Jungle: Base coat is Deathworld Forest, camo elements are Caliban Green > Athonian Camoshadepin wash > Elysian Green > Ogryn Camo

Before you even begin to paint to your models here are some steps that everyone should take regardless of whether they are painting Ultramarines. It might also be worth trying a Guilliman Blue glaze over everything to blend in the drybrushed highlights as well?Edge highlight all camo surfaces with the main base coat color’s appropriate highlight. Basically, treat the highlights as if the secondary color didn’t exist. Silver: Leadbelcher– Leadbelcher is a metallic silver paint that can be used to add a metallic touch to a miniature painted with Calgar Blue. The silver color can be used to highlight details such as weapons, ornaments and other metallic elements. Space Wolves – The Space Wolves are a Space Marine chapter known for their unique armor, which often includes blue and white elements. Calgar Blue would be a great choice for painting these elements, as well as their vehicles and machinery.

E. Corner Highlight of 50:50 Fenrisian Grey and White Scar – This is a final highlight meant to make the sharpest edges standout and should focus on corners and only the apex of rounded areas such as the knee pads. These might seem to bright, but will become slightly dulled down by the final varnish spray used to protect the finished model. Emma: Such a rich, vibrant teal colour! It’s perfect for Seraphon and many other models – I have even thinned it down to make a spooky verdigris for Grand Alliance Death models. I use yellow often with my heraldry and weapon casings, so if you want to follow my lead I’ll tell you how. Hell, you could even go for a retro-inspired scheme and use this for trim and details in place of gold, it’d probably look lovely.

So here is the ‘Eavy Metal recipe, but this leaves out some important information on how each of these steps are accomplished, which I will attempt to expand on. In our How to Paint Everything series, we take a look at how to paint well, everything, with a look at different methods from different artists. In this article we’re looking at what is perhaps the most famous of space marine chapters and the face of Warhammer 40,000: The Ultramarines. These too are reproduced from my Primaris Marines scheme. It’s almost like I painted these first and carried over a lot of the techniques! Edge the pads in gold or whichever company colour you’re aiming for. (I used S75 Elven Gold and blended it with some silver while it was wet). These are going to be the same as anybody else’s steps, including my own. Get transfers on these models (or in my case, freehand and moulded pauldrons) then varnish away! Metal models chip super easily, especially if you don’t have a really durable primer on them.

I don’t worry about eras or how improbable it is that one mercenary company would have the mix of Inner Sphere and Clan ‘Mechs the Long Nights possess; I just paint what I want to paint.Scrubland: Base coat is Zandri Dust, camo elements are Deathworld Forest > Seraphim Sepia pin wash > Ushabti Bone > Wraithbone (note this is a base paint)
