About this deal

Cross-country tyres are likely to be at the narrower end of the scale, while trail/enduro tyres tend to be a little wider. Tyres in this range offer good protection and grip for more aggressive riding. The only tyre brand to use Graphene in its construction, Vittoria’s 4C blend uses the ‘wonder’ material in the softer outer layers that coat respectively firmer (rolling-speed enhancing) central lugs and (grip-enhancing) softer corner lugs. NOTE: As of 2021, we've improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide 'Total Puncture Score' as the main puncture resistance indicator.

The Vittoria Barzo is a cross-country mountain bike tire with quite an aggressive tread pattern. The Barzo looks to be a good fit as a front tire with a faster tire on the rear wheel. A Barzo on the rear, if you need the grip, should be fine as well. This is a test of the 29x2.25 TNT version of the Barzo with the 4C G+ 2.0 compound. The TNT version (Tube No Tube) comes with reinforced sidewalls which makes it easier to set these up tubeless. A slightly lighter TLR version with thinner sidewalls is available as well. Multi-compound: Tyres that use different rubber compounds; dual compounds are normally harder in the centre or underneath for fast rolling and long life, but soft on the shoulders for cornering grip. Schwalbe and Maxxis now do triple-compound tyres too Ultimately, the ideal tyre width depends on what you’re riding, where you’re riding and how you’re riding. Weighing up all three aspects will help you find the right tyre. A tyre with a square-profile will have more edging grip but is harder to lurch into corners. Rounder tyres roll more easily into corners and slide in loose terrain more predictably. Edge grip isn’t as aggressive, though. The tyre looked as good as new after a handful of rides with really heavy rear braking in baked, blown-out summer conditions. There’s a massive range of tyre widths available, from 1.5in to 5in fat bike tyres. The majority of mountain bikers run tyres in the 2.2in to 2.5in range, and more recently up to 2.6in has become commonplace. For more about our grip test, and how the knobby tread pattern affects the test results, we have more information here.

There’s a massive range of tyre widths available from 1.5in to 5in fat bike tyres. The majority of mountain bikers run tyres in the 2.2in to 2.5in range, and more recently up to 2.6in has become commonplace. The rounded crown also makes it easier to tip the tyre from side to side when manoeuvring the bike around. There will also be many surfaces where the total grip will be a combination of the tread compound grip and the grip provided by the knobs. Under these circumstances, the hard surface grip can still be a deciding factor.Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, When I first got them I was unhappy because the knobs are .5mm shorter than the 2.35 version and I felt gypped. But I had to eventually realize that these are XC tires, and they are very good at that. The large footprint makes up for the shorter knobs and grip is very good. Rolling resistance is very low. I used these at Oak Mountain state park in AL one day when the trails were wet and greasy (when are they not at that place? lol) and had no trouble keeping up with my riding buddies. I started at 18/20 but kept dropping the air pressure until I was at like 13 for the front and 15 in the rear. In the dry they are grippy (for an xc tire) and fast. Tyres in this range offer good protection and grip for more aggressive riding. Narrower tyres offer less cushioning and have less ‘footprint’ to grip with. On soft surfaces (loose sand, grass, etc), almost all grip will be created by the knobs digging into the surface, and our test results will be of little use.

Fear not though, this doesn’t mean turnover here is slow in any way. I also like how this tread pattern has lots of little multi-directional sharp edges that really rip into the earth to deliver tons of traction. Given these shortcomings, we feel our grip test, combined with the knob height measurements, will still be valuable information when comparing tires. This powerful mountain bike tyre features an aggressive tread profile for fast rolling and exceptional cornering bite when leaning to the edges of the tyre’s tread. Plus, since it features the most advanced rubber compound layups from Vittoria, it provides outstanding traction, grip and durability while being tubeless ready for even greater performance and reliability. Technologies: All the technical wizardry in the graphene-infused tread compound along with the tread pattern design translates to a very aggressive XC tyre that suits demanding and technical courses. The evenly spread, siped tread does a sterling job in keeping you upright and allowing you to push harder through corners. Grip levels are predictable so there are never any trust issues with the front end, and the tread pattern also makes for a great companion at the rear.Sidewall: The bare side of the tyre, between the tyre tread and rim bread. Double or ‘two ply’ on DH tyres for extra stability and pinch flat resistance; airtight on UST tyres for tubeless running Puncture Force Blunt Needle: The Blunt needle has a flat tip and won't split the casing wires. To puncture the tire, the blunt needle has to cut the casing wires. You can skip to your preferred discipline using the links below, or head to our buyer’s guide for more general advice. Compound: Exclusively developed by Vittoria and achieves high-end performance. The 4C is a layering process using 4 separate rubber compounds within the same tread. The 4C construction provides unmatchable versatility in both the central and side tread areas. The finished product is extensively tested to ensure it meets the competition level performance that road and off-road cyclists demand, and benefits the rider significantly, providing better rolling efficiency, better grip and puncture protection. The Syerra is a bit slower than some on very smooth fireroads and tarmac. However, off-road on lumpier ground, it’s hard to differentiate it from faster-rolling tyres. Typically for Vittoria, wear life is excellent.
