About this deal

Through his first seven chapters, each rife with anecdotes and references he is able to validate with detailed endnotes at the end of the book, he comes up with a summary list of five points, and then ten chapters later, the list has grown to eight practical points. Clearly, repetition is a good way to ensure that one is thinking clearly about a subject. The list: An important one is visualization. So as fighter pilots, we will visualize through an entire sortie, and it's important to bring in as many senses as possible. And you want to visualize it perfectly the first time. If for whatever reason, your brain goes off on a tangent and you think about something not going perfectly, keep re-visualizing it until you get it down perfectly. Everything from how you're feeling, thinking, what it smells like — everything to make it as realistic as possible. That will not only prep your brain for interweaving all these different concepts together, but it will also increase your confidence because you essentially are telling yourself you've done it before. As a fighter pilot with two tours in Vietnam, I loved this book. Hasard’s words help the reader to learn about resourcefulness and planning when lives are on the line.

A good read for those interested in enhancing their decision-making skills by learning from high-pressure experiences of a fighter pilot. It provides practical insights into managing emotions, prioritising tasks, & using systematic frameworks to make clear decisions. Lee's gripping storytelling makes the book accessible & insightful. Do note that it relies heavily on personal anecdotes meaning there's no deeper exploration of the psychological aspects of decision-making that could have added more depth to the topic. He then discusses different types of logical fallacies and reminds the reader of the types of battles plaguing the simple Aristotalian logic problem of if all a equals b and all b = c, then all a = c. He references Shopenhauers work and the finding of over 40 illogical arguments/appeals that will illicit responses that are false.Further chapters discuss ways to get more out of reading, thinking in and around the home about family and quotidian things, what kind of thinking is best at work, and, finally, he reminds the reader that thinking can be difficult, that accepting common ways of doing things (even if in error) is often easier. He concludes the book: “…Life’s problems are always new, and defy all ready-made solutions. That’s what makes life interesting.” Lee effectively breaks down the tools that individuals and organizational leaders can apply to some of their biggest problems and most difficult situations. Another is being able to calm yourself down so that you can be in the optimal zone of performance. As I said earlier, we have these airborne tankers that are filled with hundreds of thousand pounds of fuel. Throughout your career, you're taught not to ever touch another aircraft, and now you're intentionally doing it at 350 miles an hour with hundreds of thousands of pounds of fuel between you and the tanker. New pilots will get nervous, and they'll start flying a little bit erratically. Breathing is really the best thing to do to calm yourself down when you're in the moment. Box breathing — five seconds in, hold for five seconds, five seconds out, hold for five seconds. Most of the sections of this book also offered information that is easy to understand and apply to everyday life. If it seems hard to apply any of these topics, the author makes sure to explain how it can be used in real life situations. For example, the author explains “triangle breathing” and “box breathing” when describing the importance of staying mentally calm (Lee 214).

I couldn’t put it down. Even more than the heart-pounding fighter pilot stories, Hasard has some powerful and practical words of wisdom." Now he shares gripping firsthand accounts from his time as a fighter pilot, and distills what he's learned into a powerful ACE Helix framework that can be used in business and in life, revealing how to: I have just hit the highlights of the book and it was so exciting that I found myself finishing it in 2 days. This book is a distillation of those lessons [that I learned as a fighter pilot] and how modern U.S. fighter pilots think about decision-making. Being on the cutting edge of applied decision-making, we've taught the techniques in this book to pilotd around the world, including thr Dutch, Israeli, Norwegian, South Korean, Japanese, and over a dozen other air forces...
