About this deal

In addition to choosing the right solar lights, if you’re in a coastal area, it is also important to regularly clean and maintain them to prevent the build-up of salt and other corrosive materials. Regular cleaning can help extend the lifespan of the light fixtures and ensure that they continue to provide effective and efficient lighting for your outdoor space. Always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions for specific guidance on installing your particular style of solar light. Some solar lights may require additional steps or tools for installation.

To help you find the best option for all of your outdoor spaces, we tested 27 different solar lights at The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa, including path lights, spotlights, lanterns, wall-mounted, and string lights. Each light was evaluated for its ease of assembly, brightness, features, design, value, and durability. For example, after assembly, we froze them and dropped golf balls on their solar panels to see how they would withstand the elements, and read under them to test their brightness. We even video-recorded them overnight to make sure they truly stayed on from dusk until dawn! We also tested and installed 18 wall-mounted lights on our own homes, and recorded their brightness and durability through changing weather conditions. For an affordable lighting option that adds ambianceto your outdoor space, we recommend the 33-foot-long Brightown Outdoor Solar string lights. Available in seven colors (we tested white), these fairy lights survived all of our durability tests and were easy to install, with only two stakes needed for the solar panels. And because they are solar-powered, you don’t need electricity for them to work, unlike many other outdoor string lights. Just note that they are not a great option if you want to add bright light outdoors. After putting them together, we let all the lights charge in full sunlight for the time specified in their instructions. We then took each to a dark room to run through all of their features, including any motion sensors and lighting modes and noted how easy it was to cycle through those. (If the lights didn't turn on automatically, we searched for an accessible and functioning on/off switch.) For lights with motion sensors, we exited the room, waited 2 minutes, then re-entered, and we noted whether the lights turned on without any prompting. Then, we evaluated each light's brightness by attempting to read a book under it. We loved the “moody lighting” these lights emitted but noted they were bright enough to read by only when the lights were gathered together and not strung out. Also, these did not stay lit as long as the others we tested (6 hours total). If you are mostly using them for decor or entertaining purposes, this shouldn’t be an issue. And although you can’t connect multiple strands together (as we hoped!), there is a 48-foot strand available if you have the space. Choose the location: Select the location where you want to install the solar light, making sure that it will receive direct sunlight for most of the day. Avoid installing solar lights in areas that are shaded or obstructed by trees or buildings. Post lights are tall, freestanding lights that can be used to brighten pathways or entrances, making it easier to navigate your way into your home.

Solar lights are designed for outdoor use and are not recommended for indoor use. This is because solar lights require direct sunlight to charge their batteries and operate properly. If they are used indoors, they may not receive enough sunlight to fully charge the battery, resulting in dim or inconsistent lighting. However, the degree of weather resistance can vary depending on the quality of the solar light and the materials used. It’s important to look for solar lights that are rated for outdoor use and have a high IP rating (Ingress Protection rating) to ensure they are suitable for your specific weather conditions. Despite most being weather resistant, during extreme weather, it is a good idea to protect your lights by putting them away. For example, a string of fairy lights might be fine during a rainstorm in the summer, but they may be damaged during high winds in a winter storm. Solar lights do not emit any greenhouse gases or other pollutants, making them an environmentally friendly lighting option. If they also have a motion sensor, they won’t contribute to light pollution, helping to reduce the impact on natural ecosystems. We researched popular outdoor solar lights of various styles and selected 27 to test in our Labin Des Moines, Iowa. We installed 18 wall-mounted solar lights in our own homes. We evaluated each on a wide and thorough array of attributes that included ease of assembly and installation, feature set, brightness, durability, and value.

In general, though, installing solar lights is a simple and easy process that can be done without the need for electrical wiring or special tools. Simply choose the right location and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and you can enjoy the benefits of solar-powered outdoor lighting in no time. If your solar lights are not working properly, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue and get them working again:

Before selecting your lights, Sheva Knopfler, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Lights.com, a well-known online retailer of all kinds of lights and lightbulbs, recommends asking yourself: "How much brightness do you need? Does the light need to be direct or spread out? The height of your solar lights is also important. Will they be a tripping hazard? Are you able to install them into your pavement or garden?" Yes, solar lights are designed to be weather resistant and can withstand a range of weather conditions. Most solar lights are made from durable materials, such as weather resistant plastic, stainless steel, or aluminium, and are designed to withstand exposure to rain, snow, and other environmental factors. When selecting solar lights for use in coastal areas, it’s important to look for lights that are specifically rated for this environment and have a high level of weather resistance. This can help ensure that the lights will be able to withstand the harsh conditions and continue to function properly for many years. Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the light fixture, and avoid using any abrasive cleaners or scrubbers that may damage the surface. Generally speaking, your solar lamp can store enough energy to shine when exposed to sunlight on a lovely, sunny day.
