About this deal

One of the co-stars from that epic show opened up last year about up about the “magic” of stars David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst. Jodie Comer as Villanelle. Photograph: Robert Viglasky/Sid Gentle Films/Robert Viglasky Villanelle – Killing Eve

I have the feeling that Nicholas was not really into fame. After shooting he used to wear a floppy cloth cap and nobody used to bother or recognize him. He never really does interviews or looks to be in the limelight.I have had the pleasure of working with him on several shows and David has always been so kind to me. Obviously scripts are important, but David is one of the best at delivering the punchlines and big one liners.

Comedy acting is a lot to do with timing, and David has got very good timing; like all the great ones from Eric Morecambe to Steve Martin . David is a lovely man and superb actor. It was right he was knighted for his services to acting. He learned a lot from Ronnie Barker working with him on Porridge and Open All Hours - David always said he was the governor. David is certainly never rude, but there is so much else to talk about in his career. It is funny because David was not first choice for the BBC to play Del. Jim Broadbent turned it down and then David got it.When Del Boy meets old friend Jumbo in this Only Fools and Horses moment, he realises the fake Australian doesn't have luscious hair. In fact, he's actually bald and wears a wig to cover it! Talk about a hairy moment... Even then Del’s ambition knew no bounds as he upgraded his famous line, at the end of the show telling Rodney: “This time next year we could be billionaires!”

However the woes soon turned to smiles when Del discovered the vintage watch which led to them earning a fortune - and then the episode playing out with the two brothers walking into the sunset as millionaires. Two things are true about Olivia Pope: she can handle the biggest of scandals and does so boasting the bougiest of coats. But Pope’s coats were more than a fashion statement, they were like extra characters in Scandal. Her sartorial choice reflected where she was emotionally and we got used to guessing turns the plot would take by her coat selection. Is that a white Max Mara number? Oh, a red leather Derek Lam trench? The show’s fans will tell you there’s no more classic a scene than the heroine pounding the pavements of Washington DC to fix the latest scandal with her belted coat billowing behind her. Pope’s outerwear changes were far too frequent and expensive for me to ever match. But it taught me a simple thing: my outfit can you tell my mood before I open my mouth. So it’s no coincidence that since watching the show my wardrobe has experienced an explosion of yellow. I am, in fact, aggressively happy and you’re going to know about it. Thank you, Olivia Pope, for teaching me your ways. GS Monty Don John was a creative genius, and he died far too young. He was the master of turning real life into comedy. He could put ordinary people in extraordinary situations and make it very funny, but real too without being farce. It was an extraordinary gift and it was fine line between making something brilliant and nonsense - and those three episodes were genius.”

At Del's request, he and Rodney go to the party dressed as Batman and Robin respectively, but their Reliant Regal van breaks down halfway there and they have to run the rest of the way. En route they interrupt an attempt to mug Councillor Murray, emerging from the fog dressed as Batman and Robin which scares away the thugs. Del and Rodney arrive at the party, unaware that the publican, Harry Malcolm, had in fact died the day before and the fancy dress has thus been cancelled in favour of a wake (a fact that Boycie, who met them in the doorway, "forgot" to mention), and they burst into the main room humming the Batman theme tune. The follow up Modern Man proved to be one of the most moving episodes ever when Rodney and Cassandra lost their baby. England’s 1966 World Cup victory, was watched by 32.3million, with just 200,000 fewer people tuning in for Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.

Michael says David Jason loved playing the role of Del Boy, but never made too much of his stardom.I have worked with David a few times since the final show, but we never mentioned Only Fools’ great success,” he says. “Actors don’t talk about what you have done and dwell on success. Veteran British actor Michael Jayston joined the two comedy geniuses for the episode, the final part of writer John Sullivan’s intended farewell trilogy. They cannot do it without John writing the words of Del and Rodney. And even if someone brought them a script i don’t think they could do it because they have lost so many characters - Mike the barman, Trigger and Uncle Albert. They would have to cast a completely new set for the show and I cannot see that working.
