About this deal

The Muff Liquor Company was established in February 2017 by Donegal entrepreneur Laura Bonner and her business partner Tom Russell. It has smoky caramel notes, preceded by the lemon peel you find in other gins. But it should have more interest and less floral and citrus notes. The Muff Liquor Company is a premium craft potato - based spirit company hailing from a village called Muff in County Donegal, Ireland. Inspired by Laura’s grandfather’s recipes, Laura and Tom have founded a premium potato-based craft spirits company named after the village Muff, located in the Inishowen Peninsula in Co Donegal.

Produced at Hinch Distillery, Ninth Wave is presented in a beautiful, eye-catching blue bottle with a design inspired by a combination of sea waves and ancient Celtic symbols. The distillery also produces Wild Atlantic Irish Vodka, a small batch, premium vodka hand-crafted with real Amalfi Lemons, and is continuing the tradition of craft whiskey distilling in Ireland with a limited number of 188 casks of exceptional spirit. An Dúlamán is a savoury gin in a world gone sweet, a definitive gin of the sea,” says Moira. “Unapologetically savoury, it is my love letter from the Donegal coast. We try to capture ‘draíocht na farraige’ – the magic of the sea – in our classic if off-beat London dry single-shot gin with 11 botanicals – six conventional and five seaweeds, 10 macerated in the still and only carrageen moss vapour infused through a flavour basket in the lyne arm. Our production is ruled by the moon and we only harvest the shyest of the seaweeds, pepper dulse (the truffle of the sea) on the lowest tides of a full moon.”Master distiller at Dingle Graham Coull says: "The unique botanicals found on the Dingle peninsula give a fabulously fresh, floral character that perfectly balances the traditional botanicals often seen in London dry gin and in particular juniper. For me, this combination provides a gin of unmatched quality. But to be honest, you really have to taste it for yourself." See themuffliquorcompany.com for a choice of gift boxes, including A Taste of Home, which includes Tayto crisps, Barry's Tea and Muff Potato Gin. The story behind the drink is among its many appealing factors, according to marketing director Gary McLoughlin, who started up the Glendalough Distillery in 2011 with three friends who all worked in the drinks industry. It started out as a whiskey business and moved into gin later. Indeed Sheeran and Crowe are investors in her business, along with English comedian Jimmy Carr and former Boyzone lead singer Ronan Keating, a financial boost which will allow her to expand her range and also eventually set up a visitor centre in the eponymous village on the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal.

It opens up on a classic note with plenty of juniper, with the grapefruit coming through on the finish. It is a pink gin but it is not super-sweet.

Emphasising quality and craftsmanship, the Muff Liquor Company prides itself on its small-batch production process. This attention to detail ensures that each bottle meets the high standards set by the founders. The distillation process for both their vodka and gin is meticulous, with each batch being carefully monitored to maintain consistency and quality. It's a long, long way from Greencastle in Donegal to Melbourne, further still to Snoop Dogg's after-party, with Ed Sheeran and Russell Crowe.

Despite what Crowe’s tweet implies, the brand’s name actually comes from the town of Muff on the Inishowen peninsula in County Donegal. The Muff Liquor Company also produces an Irish whiskey and a Potato vodka. It’s amazing to see companies like The Muff Liquor Company taking a lead in this highly competitive market. They aren’t afraid to be bold and get their name out there. I love all of their premium drinks products, particularly the Muff Gin, but the biggest selling point for me is the positive energy behind the brand and the fun and professional attitude of the team.

As Moira suggests, An Dúlamán is a savoury, mineral, briny gin with the quite unique umami flavours of the Donegal coast alongside juniper and other botanicals. "It is a breath of sea air rather than a slap in the face," says James Doherty. Muff Irish Potato Gin is made with four different types of potatoes. The spirit’s tasting notes are influenced by botanicals such as mandarin, rosemary, lemon, elderflower — and just a little bit of champagne extract. The Muff Liquor Company says that the champagne lends the gin a “distinctive taste.” The gin was also a Gold Medal Winner at the 2018 World Gin Masters competition. To connect with fans and aficionados, the Muff Liquor Company offers distillery tours, giving visitors a firsthand look at their production process and the chance to taste their spirits straight from the source. These experiences are educational and immersive, allowing individuals to appreciate the craft that goes into each bottle. His granddaughter Laura has continued his storied tradition of making a product born of the land and crafted by hand. Her ambition is to make sure The Muff Liquor Company is a testament to the hardworking values of Philip McClenaghan and his image now rightfully adorns the label of Muff’s bottle.
