This ingredient isn’t something that you could eat alone, but it is found in a lot of different dishes, even some which you might not realize that it is a part of. It is only an ingredient, but Kenchur is another food that begins with the letter ‘K’. 14. Kumera

A healthy, balanced diet is important for supporting your body’s immune system, and poor nutrition can compromise it. Aim to eat a wide range of fruit and vegetables to ensure you get all the nutrients your immune system needs. “Each micronutrient plays a different role in the immune system – don’t make a hero of just one”, says Sarah Stanner, Science Director at The British Nutrition Foundation. Not only kimchi, known as Korea's representative fermented vegetable food but also lactic acid bacteria derived from kimchi have been studied a lot [ 19]. Kim et al. [ 19] confirmed a total of 149 studies on the health functionality of kimchi and kimchi-derived lactic acid bacteria from 1995 to 2017. Kimchi, its extracts, and kimchi-derived functional ingredients have been reported to have various results such as anti-oxidant, anti-mutagenic, lipid-inhibiting effects, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, immune enhancement, improvement in obesity and blood glucose levels, and protective effects on the skin in cell and animal models [ 19, 20]. In addition, kimchi and its derived functional ingredients prevented cancer development in various cancer cells such as stomach, lung, colon, breast, liver, and uterine cancer cells, as well as in animal models with solid cancer, cancer cell administration, and chemically induced cancer [ 19, 20]. In addition to preclinical investigations, clinical trials have also shown the health benefits of kimchi [ 20]. In one of the clinical trials related to kimchi intake, healthy young men in Korea were given 210 g/day of kimchi for 28 days along with regular meals excluding probiotics [ 21]. As a result, it was found to improve lipid profile and adiponectin levels, which are obesity-related indicators, in serum, as well as inflammatory markers, harmful enzyme activity, and gut microflora in the colon [ 21]. The intake of 210 g/day of kimchi for 12 weeks also reduced levels of serum inflammatory cytokine and improved clinical symptoms in subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) [ 22]. In addition, the intake of kimchi reduced blood pressure and insulin resistance in prediabetic subjects [ 23] and was reported to improve fasting blood glucose and serum lipid levels in healthy young adults [ 24]. Like the situation in Korea, Japan also faced a crisis in Japan's traditional dietary cultures due to westernization of diet, and Washoku, Japanese dietary culture to celebrate the New Year) was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013 as a way to maintain its disappearing tradition [ 60, 61]. So, what about the Dutch study that suggested Covid-19 patients with a vitamin K deficiency could suffer more severe health outcomes than those with adequate vitamin K levels? It looked at vitamin K status and considered whether the nutrient plays a role in protecting the elastic fibres in the lungs, which the virus can damage. Ibitoye explains lung elastin degradation can lead to “individuals finding it more difficult to breathe and having symptoms such as shortness of breath”. However, as Covid-19 is known to cause blood clots due to inflammation, and vitamin K is associated with aiding blood clotting, this research has caused some debate in the scientific community .Some people might see this next addition to the list as a bit of a cheat answer because Kalettes are actually a hybrid type of kale. K1 is mostly found in green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach and broccoli, and is identified by the NHS as the main dietary form of vitamin K. A study has found K2 in some Dutch and French cheeses, although the content varies substantially and is dependent on the type of cheese, the time of ripening, the fat content and the geographic area where the cheese is produced. Higher fat and aged cheeses were found to have greater levels of K2, with camembert, gouda and edam all containing a good amount. After the IMF crisis, the president threw money at a new cultural content office, supported by a multibillion-dollar public-private investment fund to promote Korean creative industries and individuals. The effort was galvanised by a flood of cultural imports from Japan (if one thing unites Koreans, it is a long memory about brutal Japanese imperial rule). The drive to eclipse J-pop and J-movies with home-grown culture became a national obsession. Koreans couldn’t stop singing. The launch in 2009 of Superstar K, Korea’s version of Britain’s Got Talent, saw more than 700,000 people apply to audition. By the fourth season in 2012 that number had passed 2 million.
