About this deal

Malts is the fastest growing category in travel retail, growing at twice the rate of the overall Scotch category, but the scale of variants, ages and flavours can be overwhelming to shoppers.’ Nose: Relatively strong peaty notes at first of smoke, tar, charcoal, but also a light pepperiness. Caol Ila is certainly making its presence known, but there’s room for other aromas. Gentle herbs and soft citrus notes (mostly sweet orange peel) round out a balanced olfactory experience. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. Doug Bagley, managing director of Diageo GTME, said the release is designed to broaden the selection of malts available to shoppers in travel retail.

According to Diageo research, 70% of malt whisky consumers began drinking blends before moving into malts. Bagley added that Johnnie Walker Island Green would therefore ‘act as an incredible signpost’ for consumers looking to explore the category further. Jim Beveridge, master blender for Johnnie Walker, said: ‘As whisky makers, we’re passionate about flavour, and creating this exclusive travel retail variant of our blended malt whisky has given us an opportunity to showcase a rare blend of rich malts.’ Whether we like admitting it or not, most of us whisky enthusiasts have gone through a phase of snobbery. At some point or another a fellow (hopefully) well-meaning whisky drinker will have given you faulty advice along the following lines. ‘You should really just drink single malts and ignore blends.’ But that’s dumb. Just take a look at the Johnnie Walker Island Green.

John Walker & Sons The John Walker – also known as the Founder’s Blend, the whisky used for this only comes from casks existent during John Walker’s time. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. John Walker & Sons Odyssey – this triple malt blend is a celebration of the label’s early trade voyages during the 20 th century. With Island Green, they have released a unique Whisky that will be loved by peat heads everywhere. It was first introduced as a travel retail exclusive in July 2018.With Water: A few drops of water result in a spike of tart aromas (tropical fruit), while taming the peat. These carry through to the finish. This changes a lot – I suggest trying it first without the water, and then adding a little to see how it changes for you.

Taste: Somewhat waxy but also fairly ashy. There’s some vegetal peat, seaweed and burnt toast. A touch of honey and milk chocolate too. Named Johnnie Walker Island Green, the new blend will be available from July as a travel retail exclusive that brand owner Diageo is hailing as a ‘true game changer for the Scotch whisky category’. No surprise we get crisp malt on the nose, but it's also exceptionally fruity with green banana, papaya, lime pith and raspberry. Coastal peat wafts throughout. Slightly medicinal. Vanilla pods. Quite herbal with mint and sage. Water works brilliantly, bringing out more smoke with sardine (good to see you, Caol Ila). The nose is a perfect balance of fruit and smoke, with a lot of character. As well as peated malt from Caol Ila, the no-age-statement blend also includes whisky from Clynelish, Glenkinchie and Cardhu. John Walker & Sons Diamond Jubilee – a blend dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II following her ascension to the throne in 1952. Released in 2012, this blend contains grain and malt varieties. The Island Green is a variant of their excellent 15 Year Old Green Label blended malt; the differences are that it is NAS, and it emphasizes Caol Ila over the other malts within (Cardhu, Clynelish and Glenkinchie (though there may be more, I don't know). A prime example of an excellent blended malt is Johnnie Walker Island Green. It’s a smoky variation on the classic Johnnie Walker Green Label with a greater proportion of malt whisky from Caol Ila. The blend also includes whisky from Clynelish, Glenkinchie and Cardhu. Johnnie Walker Island Green (43%, OB, 2020)

There is so much to discover in the world of single malts that it sometimes doesn’t seem necessary to pay attention to blends or even blended malts. But that would be a mistake. Blends are masterpieces in their own right, play an important role in the world of whisky, and they’re not just for mixing with soda. (Although, a highball can be awesomely delicious.) Actually, many blends or blended malts are of similar or better quality than similarly priced entry-level single malts. We just have a bit of trouble admitting it sometimes. The Spice Road – recalling the taste of the ancient Persian, Indian, and Chinese trade routes, the blend is much like the Red Label with the addition of cinnamon and pepper. John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2014 – 2017 – are a series of experimental flavors developed throughout the year. It is the label’s dedication in pursuing newer and bolder flavors of whisky each year.

Nose: Mild peat – dark wet soil – with only a touch of smolder. Hot coals. Mildly sweet malt, with sooty cereals and only a very little bit of a floral note (rosewater, maybe). Delicate, but unmistakably peat-forward. The vatting is bottled in a 1-liter bottle at an acceptable 43% ABV and probably includes adjusted coloring and is likely chill-filtered. Unlike Green Label, this has no age statement, so expect the malts included to be younger than 15 years.
