In 1997, mellowed if not softened by age, Bartley announced his retirement, declaring: “I’m too intelligent to fight.” He even survived a brutal attempt on his life by a mob at Doncaster Races who were determined to end his reign.

And, while at 38 his boxing career may well be behind him, his dream to play in golf's Open Championship, something that has narrowly eluded him three times in the past, is still very much on the horizon. Bartley may beat Gene, but personally. My money on Gene. He was a world fighter in all fighting competition. He fought the best in the boxing ring, karate, judo all the world best fighters. Ahhhh.... another man under Gunn's pay roll..... why dont you tell your boss, to have "junior" fight me in an mma cage?
