About this deal

Thank you to Celadon Books and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own. It was exactly at that point that I had to leave to attend a talk at Anglia Ruskin University by Philip Pullman on his new book Tales From the Brothers Grimm (the talk has been recapped brilliantly by The Other Ana over at Things Mean a Lot). There were some twists I saw coming, others I didn't. The ones I did see didn't hinder my enjoyment at all. This book was a joy to read and I will say it again and again. I have recently begun seeing certain adventure novels as daydreams. I read The Apothecary by Maile Meloy and I thought it was like the daydream of an imaginative American girl who is desperate for something INTERESTING to happen. Charlie Higson's zombie novels are the daydreams of bored poli sci students. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is what elementary school teachers dream about while cutting animal shapes out of construction paper.

We have a serial killer, we have an estranged brother and sister, we have nefarious characters, we have police detectives, and we have a very important book but what does it all mean? You'll have to read this to find out. I received an ARE of The Angel Maker from Celadon in return for a fair review and agreeing not to dig up those things in my yard. Thanks, folks, and thanks to NetGalley for facilitating. There is one thing that I would have changed or shortened. It is more my personal preference than anything else. There is a part of the story (somewhere after two thirds of the book) when Joe finds himself alone. It was longer than I would have liked. the coming-of-age story is all about the oscillation of three generations saying “I will not be like my father” and finally reconciling the best of both extremes to really fulfil his own potential And this is so close to something Grandpa Spork once said that Joe Spork, even after a sleepless night and a bad cat morning, finds himself nodding. I shall now explain my plan. You may then speak, but only to amend the detail. The broad outline is not subject to negotiation. Are you ready? Good ... . I propose to have sex with you. I believe it will be excellent sex. Your obedience on one particular issue of timing will be required to make it unforgettable sex. I will explain that issue as we go. At the moment, I wish to hear your inevitable objection to the general sex part of this plan.” A retired philosophy professor Alan Hobbes is peculiar. He brings the determinism aspect into the plot. I find this part fascinating. He died in a brutal murder early in the story but did he know this event in advance? Two detectives are investigating the case.

Alan Hobbes, a professor who teaches fate and free will has been murdered in his home hours after telling his staff that he no longer needs them. It was as if he knew he was going to die.Was Hans Sjoberg wrongly convicted? Do they now have a copycat killer on their hands? Will Jamie and Wiik be able to solve what's a very complex case?

More than anything, this book makes me sad because it could have been great, perhaps even exceptional. However, this work is clumsy and disjointed, a rough draft, not a final version. I will note, especially in contrast to a number of other recently read books that pour on the cultural-referencing humor, that Harkaway manages to stay true to the emotion of the book and the family drama at its heart. He also does some interesting things with sexuality, which rather bothered me at first, until I realized he seemed to be turning Edie into a caricature of James Bond. The Angel Maker is a dark mystery thriller that follows multiple perspectives. It's about Katie and her younger brother Chris, and how a past incident shaped their future. Chris gets involved with people who are connected to a serial killer. This serial killer has a superhero ability. On the other hand, detective Laurence and his female partner are working on a murder investigation. Everything should connect at the end, giving you a clear picture of the story. Given the large cast of characters, all were poorly developed. Even with the main characters, the reader still doesn’t understand the desires, wants, fears of the characters. I’m still scratching my head about why some characters were included. What will Katie do? Can she save her brother by uncovering the big mystery he's gotten himself into, finding the identity of the man who drives a red car and stalks around their neighborhood, and connecting the puzzle pieces to reveal the truth about her past? Are all of these mysteries connected? While revising old crime scenes and interviewing witnesses seems tedious, it does provide some intriguing insight into a possible copycat killer. DI Johansson does not let this deter her, as some of the evidence points to a strong case of mistaken identity, or at least railroading someone into confessing to a crime they may not have committed. But an extremely bloated plot with obnoxiously verbose descriptions (of pretty much everything the main characters come across as they wander around) plus a recently discovered aversion for third person first tense narratives unfortunately kept me from finishing the book. Bone cancer in children? What's that about?' How dare you? How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that is not our fault? It's not right. It's utterly, utterly evil." With a winding and multi-layered plot, this creepy tale from Alex North delves into the paranormal, the mind of a serial killer, and plays with the notion of time and predestination with not one but two families tied together...in ways they could NEVER imagine!
