About this deal

Grips like a vice and twists like a rollercoaster. Impossibly clever. Impossible to put down' CHRIS WHITAKER

I liked this one but I couldn’t quite believe it, and so couldn’t get myself into it as much as I would have liked to. It starts off very chilling and intriguing but it gradually gets into “let’s make this as crazy as we can”. This might make an OK, brain-off beach read but as a plausible, enjoyable thriller I can only give it a very lukewarm recommendation. Some readers did not like the book and found it to be too unbelievable to be real and some found that they had to leave their brains behind when they read the book. Some found that the book takes a turn at one point in the novel into territory that makes it not believable. Some found that even after they had finished reading the book, they could not remember any specific details of what had gone on in the book. Readers found that some of the escapes that David is able to make to be a little far fetched and unlikely, given the torture that he is put through. Tell me what happened,” I pushed to get an answer, but he kept his head down and didn’t say anything.

These characters are - as is usual with Tim Weaver - well rounded and have a good depth to them. The more I read the more determined I was to know why the events had occurred. The setting - much of it on the island with Rebekah - almost created another "character". I was steadily drawn in. I had previously heard good things about author Tim Weaver but had never gotten round to reading one of his novels, so when I was offered this I thought it was a perfect opportunity. This book is a stand alone from the David Raker series, but he does make a cameo appearance towards the end

The author is again writing about his favourite topic, missing people. But this time the search is not for someone. We, the readers are with that missing person, Rebekah, the principal character, as she desperately tries to survive on an island deserted out of season, out of communication, bitterly cold and a hundred miles out from Long Island, hoping that she will be found.

Richard Kite approached private investigator David Raker who has an excellent reputation for locating missing people, however this is an odd case where the missing person is the one seeking the answers. When Raker starts to investigate it leaves him with more questions than answers, who is Richard Kite, why does no one know him and what links him to the body of a woman found beside a London railway line two years ago? When Rebekah Murphy was three, her mother walked out and never returned. Nearly four decades on, Fiona Murphy is still missing. Until a letter arrives in the post, claiming to be from Fiona. ABOUT THIS BOOK: When a young man wakes up bruised, beaten and with no memory of who he is or where he came from, the press immediately dub him 'The Lost Man'. Anyway, despite the few quibbles about the ending, the book and this series as a whole is well worth reading. As I've said before, these books are a guaranteed good time and will remain on my must-read list till the end of the line.
