About this deal

Cotton is more elastic than linen and so will stretch more beautifully. It is bouncy and will not sag or wave once stretched. Linen, on the other hand, is a bit stiffer and less elastic. It is therefore harder to stretch and if the stretcher or the linen expands or shrinks a tiny bit, the linen will sag or wave and will need re-tightening. Good stretching methods are vital when working with linen. Is there any way that you can talk to the paper hanger? If they have done this before they might be able to tell you the factors to consider. Gesso is the foundation of a painting. It is a paint like substance that is brushed on a canvas or substrate to prepare it for painting. It’s purpose is to protect the canvas from paint and provide a smooth painting surface. The brushed on gesso also has a bit of “tooth” which makes paint adhere to it. The layers of white acrylic gesso should be applied thinly. As a rule of thumb, I dilute the gesso to about the same consistency as house paint.

Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food, flowers, newspapers or magazines cannot be returned. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases. You also don’t want to break your frame (or warp your canvas) if you’ve underestimated the tightness of the sizing. Acrylic-based gesso has become a more popular sizing alternative to rabbit skin glue, which is only suitable for use under oil paints (acrylic will just flake off RSG). Acrylic on linen also gives you a little more friction, which can increase your brush control for fine detail. If you’re new to rabbit skin glue, you’ll want to experiment and get to know how tight it draws your canvas before trying to size a large piece of linen.Oil primer : I use Williamsburg's oil painting ground. Lately I have also started using lead ground, which is extremely pleasurable to paint on but requires at least 3 months to cure (and I'm just not that patient!). Canvas is typically prepared by first stretching it either over a purpose-built frame or directly on to stretcher bars. It is also possible to glue raw canvas directly to a panel, however, while it is good for using up leftover fabric, it is a slightly more complicated process.

Gesso brushes (one for the rabbit skin glue, and one for priming). They should have soft bristles and be fairly large, at least 3 inches wide. For sizing, you may also use a sponge instead. I've written this post to document my own experiences and show you how to prepare a canvas from scratch. While I realize that many readers won't have the time or space to do this, I think that every artist who works on canvas should do it at least once. Raw Canvas As huge fans of natural fabrics like linen, we often take its amazing benefits and qualities for granted. Even down to its natural color. Do you ever wonder what undyed linen fabric looks like? It's a great question, given that most of the linen textiles we buy are pure white or a wide range of colors. The linen is prepared on a frame made from 2x4's with some cross bracing. The detachable legs make it easier to store.

I hope these tips help a little and give you confidence in choosing your colours and applying them to the fabric. For this particular piece I used an olive green gold for the grass (but sap green is a more commonly found colour), prussian blue for the sky and burnt umber for the paving stones. I used a very dilute Payne’s grey for the window panes. All of the colours were watered down considerably before I applied them to the fabric.
